Aspen/Pitkin County Airport has confirmed it will close for more than seven months in 2027 to allow for a full runway reconstruction and the first phase of a major terminal redevelopment.
The airport will shut from 11pm on 4 April 2027 and is scheduled to reopen at 7pm on 19 November 2027, with the timing deliberately aligned to ensure operations resume before the start of the 2027/28 ski season.
The project forms part of a voter‑approved modernisation programme designed to enhance long‑term safety and operational reliability. Works include a complete rebuild of the existing runway to meet current FAA standards, alongside the construction of a new commercial terminal and FBO facility. While the runway will reopen in November 2027, flights will continue to operate from the current terminal until the new building is completed in 2029.
During the closure period, no commercial or general aviation operations will be permitted, and the terminal will remain inaccessible to all travellers. The airport is advising visitors to plan ahead and use alternative regional airports for spring, summer and early autumn travel. However, the reopening date ensures that Thanksgiving arrivals — the traditional start of the ski season — will not be affected, with Aspen Snowmass scheduled to open on 25 November 2027.
Travellers visiting outside the closure window will be able to fly into Aspen as normal for the winter season. Those travelling during the shutdown months will need to route through Eagle County Regional Airport, Grand Junction or Denver International Airport. Eagle remains the closest practical alternative at around 70 miles from Aspen, while Denver offers the widest choice of flights but requires a longer transfer through the Rockies.
Preparatory works begin this summer, including the realignment of Owl Creek Road and adjacent trails. No full road closures are expected, although alternating single‑lane restrictions may occur.
Airport Director Diane Jackson said the redevelopment represents a “long‑term investment in the safety, reliability and future of Aspen/Pitkin County Airport,” adding that the team is working closely with federal partners, airlines and the local community to manage the transition.
A community town hall will take place at the Limelight Aspen on 14 July 2026 to provide updates and outline transportation options during the closure period.
With the runway scheduled to reopen days before the lifts begin turning, Aspen’s message is clear: while the closure will reshape travel patterns for much of 2027, the 2027/28 ski season will open as planned — with flights returning in time for the first skiers to arrive.
