London City Airport is to open its first luxury pre-flight lounge, a move that hands business travellers a premium place to work, unwind and dine as the airport approaches its 40th anniversary in 2027.
The facility, being delivered in partnership with Swissport International’s airport hospitality brand, Aspire Pre-Flight Hospitality, will open in early 2027. Construction is already well under way, and the lounge will be available to any departing passenger who wants to elevate their pre-flight experience, whether booked online in advance or bought on a walk-in basis. An annual membership option is expected to follow.
The announcement lands at a pivotal moment for the Docklands airport, which has been known since 1987 for moving passengers through domestic and international gateways with minimal fuss. It now sits at the start of an ambitious growth phase, with approved plans to lift capacity towards nine million passengers a year without increasing flight movements, chiefly by introducing larger, quieter and more fuel-efficient aircraft such as the Airbus A320neo.
Guests will enter the lounge through a five-star, hotel-style lobby set within the departures hall, a layout designed to make the move from the security lane to total relaxation feel seamless. Inside, a curated interior will look out over London City’s distinctive single runway.
The design leans into an international, design-led aesthetic, anchored by a centrepiece cocktail bar and a barista station pouring locally roasted coffee. An ever-evolving artisanal food and drinks menu, inspired by the spirit of adventure and the city of London, will round out the offer.
In a clear nod to its core business audience, the lounge will also feature a dedicated workspace with extensive seating and private booths for taking calls in confidence, catering to both corporate travellers and the growing upscale leisure market.
Andy Cliffe, Chief Executive Officer of London City Airport, said the tie-up had “unlocked an exciting opportunity to bring this space to life at a time when we are growing and innovating across our business”.
He added: “The introduction of this exclusive experience is answering a clear demand from passengers and will elevate our unrivalled customer offer and reputation as London’s most loved airport. We’re delighted to be partnering with Aspire Pre-Flight Hospitality on this project, who have a proven track record of designing and operating luxury lounges in airports around the world.”
Karen Cox, CEO United Kingdom & Ireland at Swissport International, pointed to a buoyant market. “The pre-flight experience market is in high growth, driven by the new demands of the discerning traveller. Aspire is leading the way, constantly innovating and improving its guest experience to reflect this,” she said.
“We are incredibly excited about this project, and our leading hospitality credentials in this space make Swissport and Aspire the ideal brand to partner with. London City has an exciting growth trajectory, a talented team, and we can’t wait to offer departing passengers and future guests a new pre-flight experience.”
The London City project is the latest in a run of UK expansions for the Swissport-owned brand, which is set to open its third lounge at Manchester Airport later this year. The operator has also strengthened its presence at Birmingham Airport with new pre-flight services and a revamped lounge, and recently launched a business-focused premium lounge at Liverpool John Lennon Airport.
For London City, the lounge builds on a major upgrade to its main departure area completed in 2024, and underlines a future-focused strategy aimed at the premium end of the market. Crucially, the new space will be unaffiliated with any single airline, making it accessible to all passengers travelling through the airport, however they have booked their flight.
