A ground-breaking new longevity programme has launched at Verdura Resort, a Rocco Forte Hotel on Sicily’s southern coast, following the discovery of an emerging Blue Zone in the nearby Sicani Mountains.
Inspired by nearly two decades of scientific research led by Professor Gianni Pes and biogerontologist Professor Calogero Caruso, the programme draws on findings that highlight the exceptional health and vitality of the residents of Caltabellotta — a small mountain town just 22 km from the resort.
The study, assisted by Verdura Resort, identifies Caltabellotta as an emerging Blue Zone — a region where residents live significantly longer, healthier lives. The town’s high concentration of active older adults was linked to its traditional lifestyle, nutrient-rich local produce, and low-stress environment.
“I’ve been visiting Caltabellotta for over a decade and chose to get married there,” said Irene Forte, Wellness Director at Rocco Forte Hotels and founder of Irene Forte Skincare. “Being part of this research and creating a longevity experience rooted in the land and culture I love is incredibly meaningful.”
A holistic approach blending science and Sicilian tradition
The Longevity Programme at Verdura Resort’s Irene Forte Spa is designed to offer a modern interpretation of Mediterranean wellness. It combines advanced diagnostics such as blood panel analysis, Vega food sensitivity testing, and Wellness Age™ evaluations with authentic Sicilian practices.
Guests begin with tailored consultations, followed by personalised nutrition and movement plans. Treatments include 3D skin analysis with bespoke Irene Forte Skincare facials, thalassotherapy, and guided treks into the Sicani Mountains — culminating in a traditional longevity-inspired lunch using local ingredients.
“The Sicani hills are not only beautiful but scientifically significant,” said Professor Caruso. “Caltabellotta offers real-world evidence of how diet, environment, and social connection shape human ageing. It is a natural laboratory for longevity.”
A culinary philosophy centred on nourishment
Menus have been curated by Rocco Forte’s culinary director Fulvio Pierangelini alongside clinical nutritionist Giancarlo Giammarresi. The result is the Nourish menu — a daily offering of balanced, seasonal, and locally sourced dishes designed to reset eating habits and support long-term wellbeing.
