London Gatwick Airport is replacing its diesel shuttle buses with 14 electric tram-style vehicles in a £14 million sustainability upgrade, supporting its net-zero goals and enhancing the Park & Ride experience for business travellers.

London Gatwick Airport is set to overhaul its long-stay transport system with a £14 million investment in electric tram-style buses, marking a significant step in its broader decarbonisation strategy. The airport, which welcomed 43.2 million passengers last year, will introduce 14 fully electric vehicles to replace the diesel-powered shuttle buses currently serving its Park & Ride facilities.

The new fleet, supplied by Irizar e-mobility, comprises 18-metre-long electric trams designed to transfer passengers swiftly and sustainably between long-stay car parks and terminal buildings. Deployment is expected around Christmas 2025.

Steve Kelso, Head of Engineering at London Gatwick, commented: “We’re excited to have 14 new electric tram buses coming to London Gatwick. We are playing our part to decarbonise the aviation sector and as we grow, we must do it sustainably.”

The initiative forms part of Gatwick’s “Decade of Change” sustainability strategy, which includes transitioning its entire 300-vehicle fleet to electric by 2033. The airport recently celebrated the arrival of its first electric aircraft as part of the VINCI Airports Network Elektro Tour, alongside the delivery of 47 new electric vehicles for airside operations and engineering.

Mark Johnston, Chief Operating Officer at London Gatwick, added: “Our vision is to be the airport for everyone, whatever your journey, and as we grow, we must do it sustainably. Our transition to an electric vehicle fleet is just one example of our Decade of Change strategy in action.”

For business travellers seeking efficient, eco-conscious transport options, Gatwick’s latest upgrade signals a future-forward approach to airport mobility—one that aligns with the evolving expectations of corporate travel.
