Andrew’s hospitality journey began in 1997 after graduating from Birmingham College of Food, Tourism and Creative Studies with a BA (Hons) in Hotel Business Management.
His first role at Hartwell House in Aylesbury set the tone for a career rooted in independent hotels and people-first leadership. By 30, he’d achieved his goal of becoming a General Manager—a milestone in a career defined by steady progression and passion for the industry.
Now at The Relais Henley, Andrew brings a hands-on, empathetic approach to leadership. A proud Master Innholder and Fellow of the Institute of Hospitality, he’s also a vocal advocate for the industry beyond the hotel walls.
What inspired you to pursue a career in hotel management?
It was pure serendipity. I’d planned to join the military, but a broken ankle changed everything. During recovery, a family trip to Gleneagles sparked something in me—I was captivated by the magic of hotels. That night, I told my parents, “This is what I want to do.” And I’ve never looked back.
How do you balance emerging trends and evolving guests’ preferences?
It starts with listening. We talk to guests, understand what would make their stay more special, and act on it. Not every request is possible, but even small changes matter. Hospitality isn’t complicated—it’s about being kind, responsive, and never losing sight of the human connection.
Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently?
Not really. I’ve set goals and achieved them—from becoming a GM by 30 to earning industry recognition. Of course, there are moments I wish I’d handled differently for a guest’s benefit, but every experience is a lesson.
What defines your management style?
I lead by example. A Christmas gift from my team once read, “If Carlsberg made General Managers…” That kind of sentiment means everything. It tells me I’m doing something right—by being present, approachable, and setting the tone.
What are your strategic goals and vision for the hotel?
Our goal is simple: deliver exceptional guest experiences. We act quickly on feedback, and a great example is our new courtyard Oasis—created in response to guest requests for more usable outdoor space. It’s already been a hit during major events like the Henley Royal Regatta and Literary Festival.
What advice would you give to someone starting out?
Go in with your eyes wide open. Hospitality offers incredible variety and opportunity—you can rise from pot wash to GM with hard work and dedication. It’s not just a job; it’s a way of life. And it’s a truly special one.
