New research from BoatBooker, a leading boat tours platform, has revealed that autumn offers some of the finest boating conditions across the UK—often surpassing summer in terms of tranquillity, beauty, and weather consistency.
By analysing weather patterns, water temperatures, rainfall, and sunshine hours across established sailing havens with proper marina facilities, the study uncovered a surprising seasonal truth: autumn is Britain’s golden hour for sailing.
The Isles of Scilly: A Remote Boating Paradise
Topping the list is the Isles of Scilly, a remote archipelago that outshines every mainland rival. With average air temperatures of 13.3°C and water temperatures hovering around 13.9°C, it offers mild conditions well into the season. Rainfall is modest—just under 11 days per month—making it an ideal escape for sailors seeking serenity and scenic beauty.
The Isle of Wight: Dual Excellence
The Isle of Wight proves its mettle with two standout destinations: Cowes and Yarmouth. Cowes, known for its world-class yachting heritage, and Yarmouth, a charming harbour town, both rank among the top six. With water temperatures reaching up to 15°C and fewer than 10 rainy days per month, the island offers exceptional consistency and accessibility via ferry, making it a perfect autumn base.
South Coast Supremacy
The South Coast dominates the rankings, with Hampshire, Devon, and Dorset claiming eight of the top ten spots. This region emerges as the undisputed champion of autumn sailing. Devon alone features Dartmouth, Salcombe, and Plymouth—all offering a mix of sheltered estuaries and open coastal adventures. Sunshine averages over 10 hours daily, and water temperatures remain inviting, ranging between 13°C and 15°C.
Why Sailors Shouldn’t Pack Up Yet
According to Vukan Simic, founder of BoatBooker, autumn is the most underrated season for British boating. “Whilst everyone’s winterising their boats after the summer holidays, they’re missing out on some of the year’s most spectacular conditions on the water,” he explains. From Cornwall’s dramatic coastlines to Dorset’s golden beaches, the South West becomes a haven of calm seas, empty moorings, and breathtaking light.
With the crowds gone and prices dropping, autumn sailing offers a rare blend of peace and performance. Whether you’re navigating hidden creeks or passing ancient castles, the experience is unmatched—and arguably among the finest in all of Europe.
