With the prestige of being named not only in the top 100 best hotels in the world, but also within the top 10 of the best hotels in Italy!

This beautiful Art Nouveau styled hotel built in 1910 by Enea Gandola, a wealthy businessman from nearby Bellagio.  Grandola and his wife, Maria Orsonlini travelled the world and decided to create a luxury hotel for the emerging tourism on Lake Como or Lago di Como as the Italians would say.

Visited by many famous faces from Alfred Hitchcock to Frank Sinatra, the hotel was also mentioned in the film “Grand Hotel” with Greta Garbo.  Garbo referred to the hotel as being “that happy, sunny place”.

The Grand Hotel Tremezzo is located in the town of Tremezzo, on the western side of one of the most beautiful and scenic lakes in the world.  Boasting panoramic views of the lake, mountains as well as the infamous Villa Carlotta and its botanical gardens and being close to the towns of Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio, and Como itself.  It is central to explore the area by boat, car, or bike.

From the main entrance a lift takes you up to the first-floor foyer for a breathtaking view of the lake via the floor to ceiling windows.  The main area of the hotel is elegant with velvet sofas in lush greens and oranges, marble tables, antique mirrors, and crystal chandeliers and with 5 acres of gardens is the perfect haven for peace and quiet away from the main tourist areas.

With 90 rooms and suites, each unique in design and character incorporating the Art Nouveau style, very spacious and cosy in plush creams, beige, gold, and blue hues (the colours of the lake) and creating a romantic atmosphere.  Soft comfortable beds, antique furniture, and Italian marble bathrooms with the added bonus of Acqua di Parma toiletries. As you would expect, all modern amenities, flat-screen TVs, Wi-Fi, and minibars.

Obviously the lakeview rooms are a must but at a higher premium, but the garden views are perfect with either bow windows or a balcony.

The suites also have the choice of balconies, terraces, or private gardens.

With five dining options from refined cuisine to pizza, the food is all sourced locally and seasonal.  There is also a wine bar, lounge, and terrace.

Facilities include three pools, The Water on water, a floating pool in the lake.  Access to this is across the road from the hotel.  The Flower Pool and jacuzzi situated in the gardens behind the hotel,  and in the spa area, an indoor infinity pool with hot tub overlooking the lake.

Being within a few minutes’ walk from Cadenabbia harbour, the hotel can arrange a private tour aboard Ruy and Batt, one of their private water limousines or you can pick up the local ferry called “Battello” to explore yourself.  Don’t forget to visit nearby Bellagio, Varenna or Menaggio.

There are no fully accessible rooms at present but the restaurant and terrace has wheelchair access.  The hotel welcomes children with jars of sweets at reception, colouring books and soft toys of “Bobo” the hotel’s mascot.

Albeit the weather on the lake is unpredictable even in the summer months, it will not spoil your stay at this beautiful 5 star hotel.
