Martha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, is gearing up to celebrate the 50th anniversary of one of cinema’s most iconic thrillers – Jaws.
As the setting for Spielberg’s fictional Amity Island, the picturesque New England destination will host the world premiere of “Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story” on 20 June 2025.
This National Geographic and Amblin Documentaries production takes audiences behind the scenes of the legendary film, exploring the making of the blockbuster, the bestselling novel that inspired it, and the enduring cultural fascination with sharks. The free screening will mark the start of a weekend of festivities dedicated to the milestone anniversary.
Complementing the cinematic celebrations, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum will present a specially curated exhibition showcasing the film’s local impact. Running from 24 May to 7 September 2025, the exhibition will feature rare photographs, oral histories, original artwork, and movie props, offering a deep dive into how Martha’s Vineyard transformed into Amity Island.
Beyond the Jaws exhibit, the Martha’s Vineyard Museum offers a fascinating glimpse into the island’s rich history. Visitors can explore “One Island, Many Stories,” highlighting themes of fishing, farming, and voyaging. The “Flashes of Brilliance” exhibit showcases the island’s lighthouse history, including the striking first-order Fresnel Lens from the Gay Head Light.
A favourite summer retreat, Martha’s Vineyard – located off the coast of Cape Cod – is known for its charming harbour towns, striking lighthouses, and sandy beaches. Its connection to Jaws remains a key part of its heritage, making it an ideal backdrop for this golden anniversary tribute.
For film lovers and business travellers alike, the island’s blend of history, coastal beauty, and cinematic legacy makes this celebration a unique occasion not to be missed.
