Lisbon has been crowned the world’s happiest holiday destination in the newly launched Holiday Happiness Index, developed in collaboration with Harvard-affiliated clinical psychologist and holistic happiness expert Dr Natalie Dattilo-Ryan.
The Index assessed 47 global cities across five key wellness metrics: sunlight, quality sleep, healthy diet, time in nature, and physical activity. Lisbon emerged as a standout performer, thanks to its walkable layout, abundant sunshine, and impressive culinary credentials. Nearly 10% of its restaurants are rated healthy—the second-highest share globally—while its compact streets and proximity to beaches and green spaces make it easy for travellers to embrace a balanced lifestyle.
With over 2,800 hours of sunshine annually, Lisbon offers a natural boost to mood and energy levels. The city’s commitment to accessible culture and mobility is also reflected in the Lisboa Card, which provides unlimited public transport and free entry to more than 50 museums and monuments, including the Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower and the National Tile Museum. Cardholders also benefit from discounts of up to 50% at cultural attractions, shops and tourist services.
For business travellers seeking restorative downtime or bleisure opportunities, Lisbon’s blend of wellness, walkability and cultural richness makes it a compelling choice. The full Holiday Happiness Index is available via BookRetreats.
