Ski season is upon us, and travellers are looking for their next fix of snow. But this season, winter sports enthusiasts are trading mega-resorts for quieter slopes.
According to a recent report by the European Travel Commission, more than half of travellers are actively seeking more niche destinations, with a growing number highlighting avoiding crowds as a main priority.
Bookings to lesser-known ski destinations are surging as travellers seek authentic mountain experiences without the crowds, with luxury accommodation provider Top Villas reporting a 50% rise in enquiries for this.
Travellers have been highlighting uncrowded slopes as a major draw, wanting to enjoy winter sports in quieter resorts instead of battling crowds at the big names.
James Mannings, CEO of Top Villas, shares: “We’re seeing a real appetite for ski destinations that offer authentic mountain culture without the chaos. Our clients want to spend more time skiing and less time queuing, basically, and they’re discovering that some of the best and most memorable winter sports experiences happen away from the headline resorts.”
Top Villas, which offers rental properties close to ski resorts around the world, has shared its suggestions for the best lesser-known ski slopes for any travelers looking for a quieter winter sports break in 2025/26.
Sun Valley, Idaho
America’s original destination resort, Sun Valley, remains refreshingly uncrowded compared to Colorado’s other headline acts, likely a result of limited direct flights and a significant drive from major cities. But those willing to make the journey will get to enjoy 120 trails across 2,457 acres of terrain on Bald and Dollar Mountains, along with consistent snow and shorter lift lines.
Families seeking space to improve their technique away from busy slopes should consider Dollar Mountain, a beginner-oriented mountain with nearly two-thirds of its terrain rated green. You can all then retreat to this four-bedroom lodge, just two miles from the slopes, which you can look at any time of the day from the large windows around the property.
The property is the perfect place to relax after a day skiing too, particularly in the hot tub overlooking the snow-capped aspen trees and mountains outside. More information can be found here > https://www.thetopvillas.com/ en_us/destinations/idaho/sun- valley/sun-valley-64?currency= USD%2F
Telluride, Colorado
Tucked into a box canyon and surrounded by towering 14,000-foot peaks, Telluride delivers world-class skiing without the crowds. While Vail and Aspen battle overtourism, Telluride’s remote location – requiring either a scenic drive through the mountains or connection flights – naturally filters visitor numbers.
The resort spans over 2,000 acres with terrain for all abilities, from gentle cruisers to extreme chutes, while maintaining an authentic and unpretentious mountain character. Advanced skiers should head to the Revelation Bowl and the Gold Hill Chutes for untouched powder days after storms.
Those wanting a bit of luxury in a quieter resort will enjoy this contemporary penthouse that is just a short walk from the Mountain Village gondola. It is nestled in the heart of historic downtown, with breath taking views of the San Juan Mountains from its private deck overlooking Main Street, making it the ideal place to enjoy the après-ski Telluride has to offer. Whitefish, Montana
Big Mountain at Whitefish offers around 3,000 acres of skiing with an average of nearly 300 inches of annual snowfall, but its location in northwestern Montana means many skiers overlook it entirely. The resort features long intermediate runs perfect for carving turns, plus challenging expert terrain in the back bowls.
Lift tickets cost significantly less than comparable Colorado resorts, and parking remains free – luxuries that have vanished at most major destinations!
For an authentic Montana experience, but still with a touch of luxury, this lodge is located just minutes from Whitefish’s slopes. It combines Western charm – think proper wooden cabin – with contemporary luxury, such as a large wood-burning fireplace and elevated outdoor hot tub. Saint-Martin-de-Belleville, France
While Val Thorens and Courchevel battle crowds, Saint-Martin-de-Belleville offers the same access to Les Trois Vallées’ 600 kilometres of slopes but instead from a traditional Savoyard village that feels worlds apart from purpose-built resorts.
The village maintains its authentic Alpine character with a 16th-century church at its centre and traditional chalets lining the streets. Those wanting to really soak up the village’s blend of tradition and understated luxury should look no further than this beautiful ski lodge.
Aside from its charming decor, it also provides immediate access to the world’s largest ski area – perfect for skiers who want top-notch terrain without feeling like they’re just surrounded by crowds of other enthusiasts. La Rosière, France
Perched on the Italian border at 1,850 metres, La Rosière offers a unique Franco-Italian ski experience. The Espace San Bernardo connects just over 150 kilometres of pistes between France and Italy, meaning you get the unique experience of literally skiing between countries for lunch. The resort’s position ensures excellent snow conditions from mid-December through April – and best of all, it’s often overlooked by skiers heading instead to nearby La Plagne or Val d’Isère in search of bustling nightlife.
A more family-friendly feel makes La Rosière a quieter option for families, and perfectly positioned just 500m from the ski lift, this ski lodge eliminates the need for shuttle buses or long walks in ski boots for little people.
What’s more, the property features panoramic mountain views and a private balcony with a hot tub, offering the perfect spot to soak tired muscles while taking in the Alpine scenery after a day exploring different countries on the slopes.
