Wrexham Aims to Make History with UK City of Culture Bid
Wrexham has officially launched its campaign to become the first Welsh city to hold the UK City of Culture title, positioning itself as a creative and community‑driven contender for 2029. The bid builds on the city’s growing cultural profile following its global spotlight through football, film and regeneration projects.

The initiative is led by Wrexham County Borough Council in partnership with local businesses, arts organisations and community groups, aiming to showcase the city’s transformation from industrial heritage to modern creative hub. The bid highlights Wrexham’s UNESCO World Heritage Site at Pontcysyllte Aqueduct, its thriving independent arts scene, and the international attention brought by Wrexham AFC’s Hollywood ownership.
Council leaders say the campaign is about more than prestige — it’s about investment, jobs and civic pride. Winning the title could bring millions in tourism and cultural funding, following the success of previous hosts such as Coventry and Hull.
If successful, Wrexham would become the first Welsh city ever to hold the UK City of Culture designation, marking a milestone moment for Wales and reinforcing its growing reputation for creativity and innovation.
