Italian lakeside glamour, Mediterranean sun and spectacular scenery are proving irresistible for British couples planning to tie the knot.

Italian lakeside glamour, Mediterranean sun and spectacular scenery are proving irresistible for British couples planning to tie the knot.

New research reveals that Lake Como in Italy is now the most sought-after summer wedding destination for UK couples, with more than 5,500 average monthly searches across the country. The findings underline a growing trend among British couples choosing to swap home turf for sun-soaked, scenic ceremonies abroad.

The study, commissioned by luxury engagement ring brand 77 Diamonds, analysed search data across 94 global wedding destinations using 43 different search templates, from “wedding packages in [location]” to “wedding venues in [location]”. Lake Como topped the list with 5,575 average monthly searches, more than 40 per cent higher than its nearest rival, Tuscany.

British couples are clearly seeking more than just blue skies. With its historic villas, dramatic Alpine backdrop and A-list clientele (George and Amal Clooney famously married there), Lake Como offers a unique blend of romance, exclusivity and Instagram-ready views. It ticks every box for couples in search of a wow-factor wedding, with luxurious accommodation, elegant lakeside venues and an abundance of fine dining.

Italy dominates the top 10, with four destinations in the list: Lake Como, Tuscany (3,980 searches), the Amalfi Coast (1,448) and Sicily (1,260). Tuscany’s rolling hills, rustic vineyards and Renaissance charm place it firmly in second place, while the Amalfi Coast’s cliffside villages and sun-drenched piazzas continue to draw couples craving a spectacular Mediterranean setting. Even Sicily, often overshadowed by mainland destinations, draws significant attention for its ancient ruins and volcanic drama.

The research also reveals the enduring appeal of Greek and Spanish island escapes. Santorini came in third with 3,964 searches, its famous whitewashed architecture and caldera sunsets maintaining its place among the world’s most romantic destinations. Spanish islands Ibiza (3,385) and Mallorca (3,191) round out the top five, both offering a mix of beachside bliss and post-ceremony partying.

Further down the list, Malta ranks sixth (2,014), attracting couples with its rich history, stunning coastlines and English-speaking hospitality. Bali (1,177) is the only Asian destination to make the top 10, reflecting a continuing trend for exotic, tropical weddings. Cyprus, meanwhile, takes tenth place, with Paphos bringing in 1,134 monthly searches thanks to its historic charm and well-developed wedding infrastructure.

The move away from UK venues appears to reflect a broader shift in expectations around weddings, particularly post-pandemic. Destination weddings often provide a combined holiday and celebration, offering better weather, a more intimate guest list, and the opportunity to create memorable experiences for family and friends. With travel fully back on the agenda, more couples are prioritising location, atmosphere and unique settings over traditional church or registry office ceremonies at home.

Tobias Kormind, Managing Director of 77 Diamonds, said: “While many still get married locally in the UK, some Brits won’t settle for a wedding without guaranteed sunshine and beautiful views in another country. It’s no surprise that Lake Como tops the list, reflecting its status as both a celebrity favourite and a genuinely stunning location.”

He added: “The fact that four Italian locations make the top 10 highlights the country’s enduring appeal for significant life moments. Our findings show that British couples are continuing to be drawn to the classic beauty and romance of Mediterranean destinations.”

This trend also signals a potential opportunity for luxury travel planners and wedding industry suppliers. As demand for bespoke destination weddings rises, suppliers offering tailored services, multi-lingual planning support, and access to high-end venues stand to benefit. Hotels and resorts that position themselves as wedding-friendly properties with dedicated teams and packages are also likely to see increased demand.

With British couples increasingly seeking unforgettable overseas experiences to mark one of life’s biggest milestones, Lake Como and its Mediterranean peers are clearly winning hearts and headlines. As the wedding travel market continues to grow, destinations that combine natural beauty, historic charm and effortless elegance will remain firm favourites for the foreseeable future.
