Luton Borough Council, whose company Luton Rising owns the airport, approved the growth plans in December.

The decision on the £2.4bn expansion of London Luton Airport has been postponed once more, now expected on 3 January 2025. Transport Secretary Louise Haigh announced the delay, following a previous deferral by her predecessor, Mark Harper, in May.

The ambitious project aims to boost passenger capacity from 18 million to 32 million annually. In a statement to Parliament, Ms Haigh explained that the extension allows the applicant more time to provide requested information and for it to be reviewed by interested parties.

Proponents of the expansion highlight its potential economic benefits, including the creation of 11,000 new jobs and an additional £1.5bn for the economy. Luton Rising, the organisation behind the plan, emphasised the improved connectivity and increased opportunities for local residents and businesses.

However, critics argue that the expansion would negatively impact the quality of life for thousands of people. The plans include a new terminal, taxiways, and an extension of the Luton Dart rail service, but no new runway. Additionally, a new long-stay car park with emissions-based access is proposed.
