American Airlines has announced a major upgrade to its onboard experience, confirming plans to install state‑of‑the‑art seatback entertainment screens at every seat across its entire narrowbody fleet.
The move marks one of the airline’s most significant customer‑experience investments to date, combining new inflight entertainment technology with expanded premium seating and refreshed cabin interiors.
The airline will begin equipping all new Airbus and Boeing deliveries with next‑generation screens from 2028, while retrofitting existing aircraft to ensure fleetwide coverage . These displays will offer 4K picture quality, large-format screens, Bluetooth audio, USB‑C fast charging, and a personalised entertainment interface featuring tailored recommendations and enhanced interactive flight maps .
Alongside the return of seatback screens, American is also increasing the number of premium seats across its narrowbody aircraft. Premium seating currently accounts for around 25% of narrowbody capacity, but that figure will rise to approximately 40% in the coming years . The upgrade includes additional First Class seats on retrofitted Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft, 24 First Class seats on incoming Boeing 737 MAX 10 deliveries, and expanded Main Cabin Extra seating offering more legroom, earlier boarding, dedicated overhead bin space and complimentary beverages .
Cabin interiors will also receive a refresh, with redesigned seating, improved lighting and increased storage throughout the aircraft .
American’s Chief Customer Officer Heather Garboden said the investment represents one of the most substantial onboard enhancements in the airline’s history, designed to give customers “more ways to relax, stay connected and enjoy their journey” .
The upgrades form part of a broader strategy to elevate the end‑to‑end travel experience. Recent improvements include expanded Flagship and Admirals Club lounges, regionally inspired menus developed with award‑winning chefs, and the rollout of Starlink high‑speed Wi‑Fi beginning in 2027 . Additional digital enhancements will streamline booking, bag tracking and arrival processes .
With the airline celebrating its centennial year in 2026, the fleetwide installation of seatback screens and expanded premium seating underscores American’s commitment to modernising the customer journey and reinforcing its position as the world’s largest airline .
