Belfast City Airport has announced new security measures for liquids and electronics following the completion of a £3 million upgrade. The airport’s enhanced security checks mean significant changes for passengers.
New rules for electronics: Previously, passengers had to remove laptops and other large electronic devices from their cabin baggage during security checks. Now, these items can remain in any baggage, simplifying the process.
New rules for liquids: Passengers no longer need to separate liquids from their bags. Liquids, gels, and pastes, including toiletries and cosmetics up to 100ml, can stay in cabin baggage. The government defines liquids to include:
- All drinks, including water
- Liquid or semi-liquid foods, such as soup, jam, honey, and syrups
- Cosmetics and toiletries, including creams, lotions, oils, perfumes, mascara, and lip gloss
- Sprays, including shaving foam, hairspray, and spray deodorants
- Pastes, including toothpaste
- Gels, including hair and shower gel
- Contact lens solution
- Any other solutions and items of similar consistency
Additionally, liquid containers larger than 100ml are permitted through security if they are for essential medical purposes, special dietary requirements, or contain baby food or milk.
Mark Beattie, Chief Operating Officer at Belfast City Airport, stated, “This is a significant change to how passengers will move through security with cabin baggage. Passengers will no longer be required to remove electronic devices and liquids, gels, and pastes under 100ml from their cabin baggage, streamlining the process and ensuring our passengers can move through the terminal as quickly and easily as possible. At Belfast City Airport, we pride ourselves on delivering an exceptional passenger experience, and the new security screening technology will further support this commitment.”
