British Airways has unveiled plans to commence flights to the Norwegian city of Tromsø this winter, marking the first time the airline will operate services to this Arctic Circle destination.
The new twice-weekly service from Heathrow will run on Thursdays and Sundays from 1 December 2024 to 27 March 2025.
Tromsø, renowned for its Christmas markets, skiing, mountaineering, whale watching, and spectacular views of the aurora borealis, will become the most northerly point in British Airways’ network. The flights will be operated by A320neo aircraft, with the schedule as follows:
Thursday Flights: Depart Heathrow at 08:25, arriving in Tromsø at 13:00. Return flight departs Tromsø at 14:00, arriving back in London at 16:45.
Sunday Flights: Depart Heathrow at 08:15, arriving in Tromsø at 12:15. Return flight departs Tromsø at 13:40, arriving back in London at 16:25.
Return fares start from £153, and customers are allowed to bring skiing or snowboarding equipment as part of their checked baggage, provided the bag dimensions do not exceed 190 x 75 x 65cm.
In addition to British Airways’ new route, SAS will also launch seasonal flights between Heathrow and Tromsø from 2 November. Meanwhile, Iberia, another IAG carrier, will start a Madrid-Tromsø service this winter. Other existing seasonal services from the UK include Norwegian from Gatwick and Wizz Air from Luton.
Neil Chernoff, British Airways’ chief planning and strategy officer, commented: “Those who missed the northern lights in the UK need not worry! We are excited to welcome Tromsø to our route network – it is a growing winter leisure market thanks to its abundance of cold-weather activities, and we’ll be the only premium carrier operating there from the UK.
“We’ve optimised the schedule for three- and four-night trips, which we know are perfect for a destination like this.”
This new route highlights British Airways’ commitment to expanding its network and offering unique travel experiences to its customers.
