A recent survey has revealed that 51% of UK-based business travellers are apprehensive about visiting Paris during the Olympics, citing safety and security risks.

The games, scheduled from 26 July to 11 August, are drawing significant unease among travellers.

Kate Fitzpatrick, Security Director for EMEA at World Travel Protection, underscores the heightened security risks during such high-profile events. “The global spotlight on the Olympics often makes it a prime target for protests, terrorist acts, and general unrest, such as strikes,” she explains. Reflecting on previous Olympics, Fitzpatrick notes, “The 2021 Tokyo Olympics saw less disruption due to Covid-19 restrictions, yet there were still anti-Olympic protests and unrest. In Rio de Janeiro in 2016, significant security incidents included robberies against athletes, shootouts between police and gunmen, and terrorism arrests.”

Fitzpatrick also highlights unique challenges for Paris, particularly with the Opening Ceremony planned on the River Seine instead of the traditional stadium setting. “This unprecedented venue necessitates heightened security measures. Detailed crowd control measures will be in place days before the 26 July ceremony, making it crucial for attendees to familiarise themselves with the regulations governing these restricted areas,” she advises.
