Copenhagen’s official Tourism Board, Wonderful Copenhagen has launched DestinationPay, a new global model designed for destinations that want to adopt their own version of the city’s successful CopenPay initiative.

DestinationPay, it provides a framework and tools to help cities and regions reward tourists for positive actions that benefit local communities.

CopenPay was introduced to promote sustainable and responsible tourism in Copenhagen, Denmark, which rewards tourists for making eco conscious choices.

This can include :

  • arriving in Copenhagen by train or electric vehicle
  • using a bike or public transportation instead of driving a private car during their stay
  • participating in city clean-ups
  • volunteering in an urban garden
  • bringing a reusable cup to a café and choosing to eat a plant-based meal.

In return, participants receive rewards from a wide network of local partners (museums, hotels, restaurants, and attractions).

Wonderful Copenhagen is offering DestinationPay to the world to ‘support a shift from the consumption economy of travel to an experience economy where the value of a trip is measured not just by spending, but by contribution’.

Copenhagen, the Danish capital, sits on the coastal islands of Zealand and Amager and is linked to Malmo in southern Sweden by the Öresund Bridge. It was named the world’s most liveable city 2025 by The Economist and is ranked as the Happy City Index’s happiest city.
