With UK temperatures soaring above 28°C the rest of this week, holidaymakers might be surprised to learn that some of the world’s most beautiful destinations – from the Maldives to Northern Vietnam – are actually cooler than Britain right now.
According to travel experts at Away Holidays, now could be the perfect time to embrace the cooler side of paradise by booking a holiday to destinations currently enjoying their off-peak season. Not only do these locations offer milder temperatures, but they also promise fewer crowds, lower prices, and a more authentic travel experience.
“Off-peak doesn’t mean second best,” says Gianni Leone, Senior Product Director at Away Holidays.
“In fact, many savvy travellers prefer visiting tropical destinations during their quieter seasons. You get the same stunning scenery, rich culture, and incredible hospitality – just without the crowds or peak-season price tags.”
Destinations Cooler Than the UK Right Now
Ladakh, India – 8–20°C
This high-altitude Himalayan region offers dry, cool conditions ideal for trekking, with open mountain roads, Buddhist monasteries and some of the clearest night skies in Asia.
Bhutan – 10–20°C
Bhutan’s temperate summer climate makes it a great time for exploring traditional villages, forested trails and cultural sites, all without the peak-season crowds.
Kerala, India (Munnar, Wayanad, Thekkady) – 17–23°C
Kerala’s hill stations offer cooler, greener conditions in July, with tea estates, wildlife sanctuaries and fewer tourists than coastal areas during monsoon season.
Northern Thailand (Chiang Mai) – 24–30°C
Chiang Mai’s mix of cultural attractions, cooler evenings and surrounding mountains make it a comfortable option during Thailand’s quieter green season.
Sri Lanka (Hill Country & East Coast) – 25–30°C
With cooler inland temperatures and dry season on the east coast, July is ideal for combining tea trails with low-key beach time in less-visited areas.
Maldives – 27–30°C
Despite the off-peak label, July in the Maldives brings warm temperatures, brief tropical showers and excellent value for luxury beach holidays.
Northern Vietnam – 27–30°C
Regions like Sapa and Ninh Binh offer warm, misty mornings, lush rice terraces and lower humidity than southern cities – all during a quieter travel window.
Why Travel Off-Peak?
Searches for “off-peak travel” are up 53% year-on-year¹, as more holidaymakers look to beat both the heat and the crowds.
Gianni explains: “Late May through early November is considered off-peak in many tropical destinations, including the Maldives. While you might get the occasional rain shower, it’s usually short-lived and followed by sunshine – perfect for snorkelling, spa days, or simply relaxing in peace.
“Flights and hotels are often much cheaper, meaning you can stretch your budget further or afford that extra bit of luxury. You also get a more authentic experience – island life slows down, and you’re more likely to connect with local culture away from the tourist hotspots.”
A getaway to a cooler tropical destination might sound counterintuitive – but it’s the perfect way to unwind without feeling overheated. Whether you’re seeking wellness in the Maldives, mountain adventures in Bhutan, or culture in Kerala, travelling off-peak is the smarter way to explore paradise.
