A new study from the World Economic Forum (WEF) and management consultancy Kearney has revealed that global demand for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) is poised to reach 17 million tonnes per annum by 2030, equivalent to about 5% of total jet fuel consumption worldwide.

The European Commission has approved more than €600 million in new funding for 70 transport projects across the EU, with a strong focus on accelerating the shift to cleaner, more sustainable mobility.

The investment — delivered through the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) — will support the installation of electric charging infrastructure, hydrogen refuelling stations and the electrification of ground operations at several major airports.

Sixteen airports will receive funding to upgrade their ground handling fleets and replace diesel-powered systems with electric alternatives. Beneficiary airports include Cologne/Bonn and Stuttgart in Germany, Graz and Vienna in Austria, and Milan Linate and Malpensa in Italy.

These upgrades will allow airports to install electric ground power units that can supply energy to stationary aircraft, along with new charging stations for ground service vehicles — part of a wider effort to decarbonise airport environments.

The funding package will also expand electric charging infrastructure across the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T) and finance the installation of 38 hydrogen refuelling stations across member states, improving support for zero-emission road transport.

CEF plays a central role in modernising Europe’s transport networks by supporting cross-border infrastructure, reducing congestion and addressing missing links between major routes. Earlier this year, the fund allocated a further €2.8 billion to 94 transport projects, the majority of which were rail initiatives.

The latest €600 million tranche underscores the EU’s continued push to decarbonise transport and strengthen energy resilience across the continent.
