Financial Performance and Operational Highlights

The airline reported a robust annual revenue of US$3 billion, marking a substantial 23% increase from the US$2.5 billion reported in the previous year. Despite facing challenges, flydubai has demonstrated resilience, with its fuel cost remaining the highest operating expense, accounting for 32% of total annual operating costs. The airline has proactively explored fuel hedging options, hedging 12% of its fuel requirement in 2023.

Passenger Growth and Fleet Expansion

Flydubai experienced significant passenger growth in 2023, carrying 13.8 million passengers, reflecting a remarkable 31% increase over the previous year. This growth was supported by a 27% expansion in capacity, totaling 40,292 million Available Seat Kilometers (ASKMs). The airline augmented its fleet with the addition of 13 new Boeing 737 aircraft, enhancing its operational capabilities and network reach.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of flydubai, emphasized the carrier’s pivotal role in the UAE’s aviation landscape and Dubai’s economy. He highlighted flydubai’s robust business model, which enabled the airline to navigate challenges effectively and achieve exponential growth, doubling its operating fleet and expanding its network since the onset of the pandemic.

Ghaith Al Ghaith, CEO of flydubai, reiterated the airline’s commitment to strategic network development, with plans to introduce new destinations, including Basel, Riga, Sochi, Tallinn, and Vilnius. He underscored flydubai’s proactive approach to fleet modernisation, with the upcoming delivery of 12 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft to meet evolving passenger demand.

Flydubai launched 17 new routes in 2023, culminating in a network of 122 destinations across 52 countries. The airline marked its return to Southeast Asia with operations to Krabi and Pattaya in Thailand. Despite challenges with the aircraft manufacturer’s delivery schedule, flydubai remained agile, leveraging Aircraft, Crew, Maintenance, and Insurance (ACMI) agreements to maintain operational efficiency.
