Google has announced a significant update to its digital wallet, allowing users to create digital IDs from U.S. passports. This move is part of a broader push towards digital identification, which is gaining traction across the travel industry and even receiving support from the U.S. government.
On 13 September, Google revealed its latest feature aimed at increasing the adoption of digital ID technology. Alan Stapelberg, Group Project Manager for Google Wallet, stated, “Today we announced a new type of digital ID in Google Wallet which can be created from a U.S. passport, allowing more people to create and save a digital ID even if their state has not yet launched a solution.”
The feature is currently in beta testing and will soon be available to users. Once implemented, Google Wallet users will be able to use their digital passport IDs at select TSA checkpoints, enhancing convenience and security for travellers.
