Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA) is facing significant operational disruption as Super Typhoon Ragasa—currently the world’s strongest storm—sweeps across the South China Sea, bringing hurricane-force winds and torrential rain to the region.

The Airport Authority Hong Kong (AAHK) confirmed that while HKIA remains open, hundreds of flights have been cancelled or delayed between 23 and 24 September. Travellers are advised to check with their airlines before heading to the airport and to use the “My HKG” app or HKIA’s website for real-time updates.

The typhoon, which has already claimed lives in Taiwan and the Philippines, is expected to maintain its strength as it nears the Chinese coast. Hong Kong has issued a No. 8 typhoon signal, with authorities considering raising it further as conditions deteriorate.

In response, HKIA has activated its Airport Emergency Centre and deployed its Passenger Care Team to assist stranded travellers. Temporary rest areas with seating, charging stations, bottled water, snacks and blankets have been set up in the terminal. Select restaurants and shops will remain open, some operating 24 hours to support passengers sheltering in place.

Land transport to and from the airport is also affected. The Taxi Queue Ticket System has been activated, and shuttle buses are being provided for airport staff commuting between Tung Chung and HKIA.

Business travellers with scheduled connections through Hong Kong are urged to monitor developments closely and prepare for extended delays. With Ragasa’s impact expected to rival previous destructive storms such as Mangkhut and Hato, contingency planning is essential for those navigating East Asia’s travel corridors this week.
