London City airport has released concept images of what the interior of its terminal will look like in 2022 as it continues a £500 million development project.

The new 51,000sqm terminal will feature additional shops, restaurants and bars that are “synonymous with the capital” and showcase “the best of the city” to its business and leisure passengers, according to the airport.

New concept images by London-based The Design Solution portray plans for the airport’s new check-in and security areas, departures lounge, baggage claim, dedicated arrivals area and gate lounges.

London City says the terminal will offer passengers “more space, better facilities, smart airport experiences and choice”.

The overhaul forms part of a wider £500 million development programme that began in 2017 and includes eight new aircraft stands and a parallel taxiway next to the runway. Construction is already underway, with terminal facilities being built to the east and west of the existing building.

The project is due for completion in 2022 and will allow London city to accommodate an additional 2 million passengers a year and 30,000 extra flights. The airport expects to see 5 million people travel through its halls in 2019.

In addition, the airport is due to begin testing a new digital air traffic control tower, which is set to become fully operational in 2020.

CEO Robert Sinclair said: “Through our transformation programme, we have a blank canvas and a great opportunity to provide our passengers with an airport experience that truly reflects modern London, the greatest city in the world. We welcome millions of visitors to London every year right into the heart of London, and we want to create an unforgettable first and last impression of London, showcasing the very best of the capital and demonstrating it is open for business and thriving.

“Alongside this, we will of course maintain an airport experience that is grounded in our fundamentals of providing speed, efficiency, convenience and excellent customer service.”
