London Stansted Airport has achieved a remarkable milestone, reporting its busiest month ever as the summer travel season gains momentum.
In April, Stansted welcomed a staggering 2.48 million passengers, surpassing a pre-pandemic high by 90,000 and marking a significant 5.5% year-on-year increase. This surge brings the airport’s 12-month total to 28.64 million, a remarkable 10% jump compared to the previous year.
Gareth Powell, Managing Director of London Stansted, attributed this success to the airport’s extensive passenger route network, operational efficiency, and global connectivity provided by cargo carriers. Powell remarked, “April was another very strong month for London Stansted with both passenger and cargo numbers hitting new highs.”
The Easter holidays contributed to the bustling activity, with Stansted’s dedicated team ensuring a smooth airport experience for passengers. Notably, the airport’s cargo operation also reached unprecedented levels, transporting over 27,000 tonnes of freight in April alone.
This achievement underscores Stansted’s pivotal role in supporting the economic prosperity of the London and East of England region. Powell emphasized, “The record volumes of freight passing through Stansted is yet another indication of the vital role the airport plays in supporting the economic success of the region we serve.”
Harriet Fear MBE, Director at Cambridge&, highlighted Stansted’s significance in facilitating global connectivity for businesses in the Greater Cambridge ecosystem. She stated, “With Stansted on Cambridge’s doorstep, businesses in the Greater Cambridge ecosystem are able to quickly and conveniently connect to markets across Europe and the Middle East directly for passenger travel and from a freight perspective also to the US and Asia, meaning truly global connectivity.”
