The airline has announced a change in its procedures for women travelling alone, offering them the option to select the gender of their seatmate to enhance their sense of safety.
Starting in August, IndiGo will allow female passengers to check the gender of the person seated next to them before booking.
This change, however, will not extend to male passengers. When booking their flights, men will not have the option to see the gender of their seatmate and will only be able to choose from available seats.
The budget airline operates as a codeshare partner with Qantas, ferrying Australian passengers to destinations like India and within the country itself.
The initiative to change seatmates originated from an IndiGo survey that asked women about their preferences for more comfortable and safer travels.
