MGM Resorts is embarking on an ambitious $2 billion project in Dubai, featuring its own version of the ‘Sphere’. CEO and President Bill Hornbuckle has promised that the ‘Dubai Sphere’ will be “equally compelling as the Las Vegas Sphere.”

The project, which has been in development since 2017, includes three MGM Resorts brands: MGM, Bellagio, and Aria, with the Sphere as the centrepiece. Despite initial delays, the construction contract was awarded this year, marking significant progress.

Speaking at the Skift Global Forum, Hornbuckle described the Dubai Sphere as a smaller but equally impressive counterpart to its Las Vegas sibling. The venue will feature a 300-seat mini showroom and immersive visual experiences. “It’ll have a show line that walks through the history of Dubai,” Hornbuckle noted, highlighting the city’s rapid transformation from desert to megatropolis.

While the Dubai Sphere will be smaller in capacity compared to the Las Vegas Sphere, it promises a unique entertainment experience with 3D light and sound effects shows for up to 300 guests. The Las Vegas Sphere, by contrast, stands at 112 meters tall and accommodates 18,600 seats.

Hornbuckle clarified that the Dubai Sphere is not part of Sphere Entertainment, the company behind the Las Vegas Sphere. MGM Resorts is currently managing the project independently but is open to future partnerships.

Executives at Sphere Entertainment have previously expressed interest in licensing smaller venues to expand their global footprint. MSG executive chair and CEO Dolan mentioned plans to build more Spheres worldwide, including smaller versions for different markets.

Although there is no official opening date for the Dubai project, Hornbuckle confirmed that progress is being made. The complex is currently non-gaming, but there is potential for change. Hornbuckle hinted at the possibility of a casino license for Dubai, citing the region’s evolving cultural landscape.

MGM’s partner in Dubai, Wasl, is a major hotel owner and developer with close ties to the government. The group has also applied for a casino license in Abu Dhabi, indicating a broader strategy for the region.
