QantasLink’s new services to Christmas and Cocos (Keeling) Islands will take off today, marking the first time the national carrier has operated to this unique region.

The services will operate twice per week with QantasLink’s fleet of Airbus A319 and A320 aircraft, providing critical connections for the islands’ 2,500 residents, as well as government services and freight.

The launch of today’s flights follows the announcement of a new partnership between Qantas and the Australian Government in August, which allows the airline to operate flights to the Indian Ocean Territories for the next five-years.

QantasLink CEO Rachel Yangoyan said the airline was thrilled to begin operating flights to the Indian Ocean Territories.  “As the national carrier, Qantas has a proud history of connecting remote communities across Australia and these new services will provide essential connectivity for thousands of local residents every year.

“It will also make it easier for visitors to explore this stunning region and experience its natural beauty and unique island culture.

“This is the third new route Qantas has launched out of Western Australia in the past three months, with flights from Perth to Newcastle and Hobart taking off in September, adding thousands of extra seats to and from the state every year.”
