Riu Hotels & Resorts has completed a £290m acquisition of The Westminster in London, marking the capital’s largest single-asset hotel sale since 2021 and strengthening Riu’s UK footprint.

Riu Hotels & Resorts has completed a £290 million acquisition of The Westminster, delivering one of London’s most significant hotel transactions in recent years and the largest single-asset sale in the capital since 2021.

The 464-room property has been relaunched as Hotel Riu Plaza London The Westminster, with the Spanish operator ending the previous franchise arrangement and assuming full control of operations. The hotel had formerly traded under Hilton Curio Collection.

The acquisition gives Riu a major foothold in one of London’s most tightly held hospitality sub-markets, close to Westminster and the South Bank, where large, modern hotel assets rarely come to market. The property was previously owned by a consortium including Westmont, BHP and PPF, which acquired the hotel in 2018 and completed a comprehensive refurbishment in 2021.

For Riu, the deal represents a strategic acceleration of its expansion in major global cities. The Westminster becomes the group’s second London hotel, following the opening of its Riu Plaza property in Victoria in 2023, and further strengthens its growing urban portfolio across Europe and the Americas.

The transaction underlines renewed investor confidence in prime London hospitality assets, particularly those with scale, modern infrastructure and strong international branding, as global travel demand continues to recover.
