Sofitel Sydney Wentworth has unveiled the first glimpse into its £30m+ update, which is set to launch in October 2024 after just ten months of work.

The transformation includes an extensive refurbishment to enhance the hotel’s offering for its guests while retaining the distinctive heritage it is known for across the world.

With a storied history spanning over half a century, Sofitel Sydney Wentworth has been an iconic feature of Sydney’s urban landscape since its inception as the Wentworth Hotel in 1966. Just footsteps away from Australia’s key landmarks, the Sydney Harbour Bridge and Sydney Opera House, the luxury hotel has been hosting international guests since its beginnings.

Led by architecture and interior design firm Fender Katsalidis, the refurbishment of the heritage-listed property includes 436 guest rooms and suites that have been reimagined to offer a blend of luxury and comfort, alongside the redesign of public spaces and the grand entrance lobby, which will welcome guests with vibrant, striking features.

New features of the hotel will include the Health & Wellness Studio designed with a fully equipped gym, and an exclusive club lounge for existing members and day pass holders to relax, entertain and work.  The five-star luxury hotel is re-inventing hotel dining with the introduction of its dining precinct, featuring two restaurants and two bars, alongside one of Sydney’s most iconic rooftop terraces.

Since its launch as Sydney’s first luxury hotel, Sofitel Sydney Wentworth has hosted an illustrious array of international dignitaries and celebrities, solidifying its status as a cultural hub. These include the late Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh, Prince Charles, the late Princess Diana, Bill Gates, numerous film and sports stars, and American Apollo astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins.

Sofitel, part of the world-leading hospitality group Accor, was the first international luxury hotel brand to originate from France and a celebrated ambassador of French culture and elegance around the world.

The hotel’s famous pillarless Wentworth Ballroom, one of Sydney’s largest at 629m² will also benefit from major updates as part of the renovation.

Sam Panetta, General Manager, Sofitel Sydney Wentworth, said, “We are excited to reignite and add layers to the history of this landmark hotel. The repositioning of the Sofitel will enhance the luxury services on offer and reinforce the value of the brand.”

The completion of the refurbishment will see Sofitel Sydney Wentworth build on its position as one of Australia’s most iconic hotels by offering its customers greater comfort and an even more luxurious experience through its enhanced facilities while celebrating the hotel’s illustrious heritage.
