Uber has launched a new Safety Preferences tool within its app, providing UK customers with the flexibility to activate specific safety features based on their travel circumstances.

This tool is accessible through the settings section of the Uber app and allows users to enable safety features automatically at certain times of the night, when departing from particular locations, or even after leaving a bar or restaurant.

Key Safety Features:

RideCheck: In-app check-ins from Uber when a ride goes off-course, stops unexpectedly, or ends early. Customers and drivers can confirm everything is okay or take actions such as using the app’s emergency button or reporting issues.
PIN Verification: A four-digit PIN code is provided to customers to share with the driver before a ride begins, ensuring that riders enter the correct vehicle.
Share My Trip: Customers can automatically share their live location and trip details with a friend or family member.

Fay Maxted OBE, CEO of The Survivors Trust, expressed enthusiasm about the strengthened partnership with Uber. The Survivors Trust collaborates with voluntary sector agencies across the UK and Ireland, offering services for victims and survivors of rape, sexual violence, and sexual abuse.

“This new rider-controlled safety feature not only provides an additional layer of support for solo travellers but also plays a crucial role in breaking the taboo surrounding sexual violence,” Maxted stated. “It shouldn’t be solely the responsibility of riders to ensure their safety, so Uber’s initiative in creating discreet and hassle-free travel safety measures is leading the way. We hope it serves as an inspiration to other companies to not ignore the difficult taboo of sexual violence and to take joint responsibility in tackling the problem.”
