From 25 February 2026, travellers from 85 countries — including the US, Canada and France — will need to obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before entering the UK.

Digital Permission Becomes Mandatory

The UK Home Office has confirmed that from next year, international visitors will not be able to legally travel without digital permission in the form of an ETA or eVisa. Airlines will be required to check passengers have valid authorisation before boarding.

British and Irish citizens are exempt, but dual nationals are strongly advised to travel with a valid British passport or certificate of entitlement to avoid issues at departure.

Simple Application Process

Applying for an ETA is designed to be straightforward:

  • Download the official UK ETA app or apply online.
  • Fill in personal details including passport information and travel plans.
  • Pay the £16 fee per application.

Most applicants receive a decision within minutes, though the Home Office advises allowing up to three working days in case additional checks are required.

Why It Matters

The ETA scheme is part of the UK’s wider plan to digitise its immigration system and move towards a contactless border experience. Since its phased launch in 2023, more than 13 million visitors have already applied successfully.

Migration Minister Mike Tapp said: “ETAs give us greater power to stop those who pose a threat from setting foot in the country and give travellers a more seamless experience.”

  • Cost: £16 per person.
