Klocke Estate is one of those rare Hudson Valley projects built with absolute intention.
Set across 160 acres in Claverack, New York, the estate brings together vineyards, orchards, a distillery, and a strikingly designed hospitality space under a single, quietly ambitious vision. Founder John Frishkopf began shaping the idea decades ago, inspired by early wine‑tasting experiences during his MIT years.
By 2016, he committed to creating a true “earth‑to‑glass” operation – one that controls every stage of production, from growing the fruit to ageing the final spirit. The result is a distillery that feels more European than a typical American craft outfit, with a strong emphasis on terroir, precision and patience.
The apple brandy sits at the heart of this philosophy. Made entirely from estate‑grown apples, the fruit is pressed, fermented into cider, distilled, and then aged predominantly in French oak barrels. The approach nods to Calvados and Cognac traditions, but the flavour profile remains distinctly American, shaped by the orchard’s own character and the estate’s meticulous handling.
On the nose, the brandy is expressive and orchard‑forward, with ripe apple, warm spice and a gentle floral lift. The palate follows with a structured, oak‑inflected richness that speaks to the quality of the distillate and the ambition behind it.
For me, the spirit’s intensity was noticeable. It’s crafted to be bold and confident, and while that will appeal to drinkers who enjoy a more powerful, European‑style apple brandy, it may feel a touch strong if you prefer something softer or more rounded. Serving it slightly chilled or over a large ice cube helps and even a small splash of water opens up the aromatics beautifully. It also performs well in cocktails — an apple brandy Old Fashioned or a Jack Rose‑style drink allows the fruit to shine while smoothing the edges.
Klocke Estate’s apple brandy is a beautifully made, orchard‑rich spirit with clear craftsmanship behind it. It’s polished, expressive and full of character, though its strength may feel a little assertive if you lean toward gentler brandies. For those who enjoy bold, structured brandies, it’s a standout.
