The George in Rye is a captivating hotel located in the medieval town of Rye, East Sussex, offering a unique mix of historical charm and modern luxury. This Grade II listed property has stood since 1575 and features an original Georgian ballroom, beamed gallery, and an antique wig store, hosting numerous kings throughout its storied past.

Design that tells stories

Owned by Alex and Katie Clarke since 2004, the hotel presents a seamless blend of history and modern design, offering an ideal sanctuary for those seeking to escape the hustle and bustle of contemporary life.

Devastated by a fire and empty for a few years, it made its comeback in 2022, bigger and better. Seven new rooms were added around the courtyard garden.  The hotel is filled with eclectic treasures, from the reception desk, a former church altar, to the quirky designer touches like the scallop shell-lined grotto in the ladies’ toilets.

Rooms

The George’s 41 rooms showcase a fusion of antique allure and modern amenities. Each room is adorned with custom-made furniture, luxurious linens, and an array of reclaimed and vintage pieces, giving every space a unique personality. The hotel offers two fully accessible rooms and five accommodations that are pet-friendly. The junior suites feature a freestanding roll-top bath, and all rooms are equipped with REN products for a touch of self-indulgence.

Although no spa at the property, they are able to offer in room treatments booked via reception.

Dining

The Grill proudly showcases a sumptuous menu brimming with local produce. Each dish is a celebration of the region’s rich agricultural heritage, crafted with the freshest ingredients sourced directly from nearby farms.

The Dragon Bar, a cherished local haunt that stands as a testament to the area’s vibrant pub culture. Indulge in a selection of local ales, each with its own story and flavour profile. The bar also takes pride in offering an exquisite array of sparkling wines, meticulously produced at the four esteemed vineyards that grace the locality.
