Steam Dreams Rail Co., renowned for its nostalgic and unforgettable steam train experiences, has launched its 2026 Christmas programme, inviting passengers to step aboard a historic steam locomotive for a magical journey to some of the UK’s most atmospheric festive destinations.
Running throughout November and December, the seasonal collection combines the romance and nostalgia of steam travel with visits to Christmas markets, historic cities, festive shopping and exceptional onboard hospitality. Journeys depart from London and locations across Essex and East Anglia, with a choice of indulgent Pullman Dining or beautifully restored First-Class carriages.
From the twinkling streets of York and historic Chester to Edinburgh’s spectacular Christmas celebrations and Winchester’s festive market, the programme offers a memorable way to begin the Christmas season.
Monday, 16 November 2026: London to York Christmas Market
Departing London King’s Cross, with additional pick-ups at Potters Bar, Hatfield, Huntingdon and Peterborough, passengers will travel by steam to the heart of historic York for a day immersed in one of the country’s best-loved Christmas destinations. York’s medieval streets provide a suitably atmospheric backdrop to its annual Christmas celebrations, with traditional chalets, festive food and drink and seasonal shopping filling the city centre. After time to explore at leisure, passengers return to the train for the journey home.
Thursday, 19 November 2026: Southend to Chester Christmas Market
Departing Southend Central, with additional pick-ups including Leigh-on-Sea, Barking and Milton Keynes, this festive steam journey heads to historic Chester for a day of Christmas shopping and sightseeing. Passengers can explore the city’s historic streets and festive market before returning to the comfort of the train for the journey home.
Thursday, 26 November–Sunday 29 November 2026: Edinburgh Christmas Market
For those looking to turn their festive steam experience into a longer escape, Steam Dreams will operate a special four-day journey from London King’s Cross to Edinburgh. Combining the golden age of rail travel with time to discover Scotland’s capital during one of its most atmospheric times of year, passengers can explore Edinburgh’s Christmas Market, seasonal attractions and historic streets, with three nights in the city. Guests can arrange their own accommodation or book through Steam Dreams. Pullman Dining passengers may choose from a selection of distinguished five-star hotels, including The Scotsman, The Caledonian and The Balmoral, while First Class passengers can stay at the four-star Hilton Carlton, just a two-minute walk from Edinburgh Waverley. Saturday, 28 September 2026: Forth Bridge Lunchtime Tour
Departing Edinburgh Waverley, this spectacular lunchtime steam journey crosses the world-famous Forth Bridge before travelling through Fife and along the Forth Estuary, returning via Stirling and Falkirk. Passengers can enjoy sweeping views of the Scottish countryside from the comfort of the beautifully restored carriages, with the iconic A4 steam locomotive Sir Nigel Gresley scheduled to haul the train. Pullman Dining costs from £295 per person, including a Champagne cocktail, seasonal lunch, coffee and petit fours, while First Class costs from £185 per person.
Wednesday, 2 December 2026: East Anglia to Winchester Christmas Market
Departing Bury St Edmunds, with additional pick-ups at Ipswich, Colchester North, Witham, Chelmsford and Shenfield, this magical seasonal journey steams through winter landscapes towards Hampshire, where passengers can Explore Winchester Christmas Market, set against the magnificent backdrop of Winchester Cathedral and filled with pretty wooden chalets, artisan gifts, festive treats and the scent of mulled wine.
Tuesday, 15 December 2026: The White Cliffs Christmas Lunch
Departing London Victoria, with an additional pick-up at Bromley South, this enchanting festive journey travels through the North Downs, across the River Medway and along the North Kent Coast towards Canterbury before reaching Dover and steaming beneath the famous White Cliffs. The beautifully decorated vintage train, complete with twinkling lights and festive garlands, offers a wonderfully nostalgic way to celebrate Christmas while enjoying winter countryside and dramatic coastal views. Pullman Dining costs from £325 per person, including Champagne, canapés, a multi-course festive lunch and half a bottle of wine per person, while First Class costs from £195 per person, including a celebratory welcome drink and complimentary tea and coffee.
Feast in Pullman Dining
For the ultimate festive experience, Pullman Dining transports passengers back to the time of luxury rail travel, with impeccable onboard service, beautifully dressed tables and menus inspired by the regions travelled through and crafted using locally sourced, seasonal ingredients. On a full-day journey, guests are welcomed aboard with a Champagne Bellini before enjoying a multi-course breakfast as the scenery rolls past the window. On the return journey, Champagne and canapés are followed by a four-course evening meal accompanied by half a bottle of wine per person. Passengers are seated in plush armchair-style seating at tables for two or four, creating an indulgent Christmas experience from the moment they step aboard.
Relax in First Class
Alternatively, First Class offers a relaxed and refined journey in beautifully restored vintage carriages, with spacious cushioned seating arranged around tables for two or four. Passengers can bring their own picnic, while complimentary tea and coffee and a celebratory welcome drink are included. Drinks and snacks are available to purchase to enjoy at your seat with the option to add a traditional Afternoon Tea at the time of booking for a supplement.
Day trip prices start from £245 per person for First Class and £465 per person for Pullman Dining.
