Arriving at Grand Hotel Fasano feels like stepping into a beautifully restored postcard from Italy’s golden age of travel.
The butter‑yellow villa sits directly on the shores of Lake Garda, its façade glowing softly against manicured gardens, palms and the glimmering water just metres away. It’s the kind of arrival that instantly shifts your mood with the lake, the mountains and the gardens working together in a quiet, cinematic harmony.
The estate’s story stretches back to the 18th century, when it served as a hunting lodge for the Austrian imperial family. With the opening of the Brenner Railway in the late 19th century, Lake Garda blossomed into an international destination, drawing travellers from across Europe. The building later served as a hospital during both World Wars, before returning to hospitality in the 1930s and officially opening as Grand Hotel Fasano in 1962. Over the decades, it has welcomed royalty and cultural icons from Shirley Temple to Dino Zoff and Dolce & Gabbana all drawn to its lakeside serenity.
Inside, the aesthetic is refined yet relaxed. a contemporary interpretation of classic Italian elegance. Neutral‑toned tiled floors, creamy palettes, soft lighting and a polished piano in the main salon create an atmosphere that is both sophisticated and deeply comfortable. The décor never tries too hard; it simply allows the lake and the architecture to speak.
The hotel now offers 86 elegant rooms and suites, each individually styled, but the suites are where the Fasano magic truly unfolds. Mine overlooked the gardens and lake, dressed in soft checked fabrics and a palette that mirrored the landscape outside. The standout feature was the freestanding bath positioned within the room, a sculptural centrepiece that made the space feel indulgent and quietly glamorous stocked with Acqua di Parma toiletries, a detail that always signals impeccable taste.
Days here fall into an easy rhythm. Breakfast on the terrace as the lake catches the morning sun. A swim in the expansive indoor–outdoor pool, connected by a tunnel passage to the AVQA spa offering a hydromassage area, sauna, Turkish baths, state‑of‑the‑art gym and the serene spa garden on the lake. Then there’s the hotel’s signature indulgence and my favourite the “bed on the lake”, a private decked platform hovering above the water perfect for reading, sunbathing or simply watching the boats drift by.
Dining is a highlight. Il Fagiano, the hotel’s Michelin‑starred restaurant, is led by Chef Maurizio Bufi, whose cooking is elegant, expressive and deeply rooted in Italian tradition. For something more relaxed, Osteria Il Pescatore sits beneath the shade of 200‑year‑old magnolia trees, offering a romantic, almost secret‑garden atmosphere and when in Italy for aperitivo, Ramas Bar delivers classic Italian cocktails with a view that turns molten gold at sunset.
The hotel also offers two new multifunction meeting spaces for private events and executive gatherings, alongside an attentive concierge team who can arrange everything from local wine tastings to helicopter tours and sailing trips.
