Why the Four Seasons Cairo at the First Residence Remains Egypt’s Most Elegant Grand Dame

Cairo has its fair share of luxury hotels, but the Four Seasons at the First Residence remains the city’s undisputed grand dame.

Opened in the late 1990s and last renovated around 25 years ago but with some selective refreshes, it carries a distinctly French sensibility throughout, a kind of gently faded chic that feels more Parisian hôtel particulier than Middle Eastern mega‑resort. Even before you reach reception, the mood is set by a spectacular fresh‑flower display in the lobby: towering arrangements in colours that echo the hotel’s period furnishings and polished marble.

The building sits on the western bank of the Nile, directly opposite the site of the new Cairo Zoo, giving it a rare dual outlook: one side onto the river’s slow, silvery sweep; the other onto a vast green expanse in the making. Its location in Giza places you close to the city’s cultural landmarks while keeping the energy at a comfortable level, ideal for business travellers who want Cairo’s intensity on their terms.

The hotel has 262 rooms and suites, all decorated in soft, classical tones with French-influenced detailing. My Nile View Suite palette leaned into creams, golds and muted pastels with a generous writing desk which made working easy.  The room included all the expected Four Seasons touches: a well‑stocked minibar, Nespresso machine, fine glassware and thoughtful stationery.

The marble‑topped bathroom was a highlight very spacious, with a deep soaking bath, separate walk‑in shower with excellent water pressure and Byredo Gypsy Water toiletries that felt indulgent without being overpowering.  Of course, the signature Four Seasons bed delivered its usual magic, marshmallow‑soft pillows, perfect mattress tension and the kind of sleep that resets you entirely.

Breakfast is served in a grand, light‑filled room anchored by a stained‑glass window and a glittering chandelier. The spread is extraordinary, I’ve never seen such a breadth of breads and pastries in one place. It’s the kind of breakfast that makes you want to linger longer than planned.

On the rooftop, the two outdoor pools offer a serene escape, complete with a blue‑agate‑accented bar that feels almost Mediterranean. The spa is divided into separate men’s and women’s areas, each with treatment rooms, relaxation lounges and steam facilities, while the gym overlooks the Nile and a motivating backdrop for jet‑lag workouts.

One of the hotel’s most unexpected advantages is its own attached shopping centre, accessible directly from the lobby. High‑end boutiques, cafés and lifestyle stores make it easy to pick up gifts or essentials without leaving the property.

Connected to the First Mall, is the First Residence Casino. Discreetly accessed through the mall rather than the main lobby, it adds a touch of old‑world glamour to the property – all velvet, low lighting and classic table games. For business travellers, it’s a novelty to have gaming, luxury shopping and fine dining all under one roof, without ever stepping into Cairo’s traffic.

The hotel also offers a selection of boutique‑scale meeting rooms, dressed in the same French‑period style as the rest of the property. Dining options extend beyond the showstopping breakfast room: Aura, the poolside restaurant, serves elegant Levantine dishes; La Gourmandise in the adjoining mall offers French patisserie and light bites and the Tea Lounge  – all marble, soft golds and quiet refinement – is perfect for informal meetings or a calm hour of work with a pot of mint tea.
