What we liked

  • Total seclusion within a 29 acre nature preserve, yet only a short drive from the airport.
  • A world class spa and six excellent restaurants, now backed by a MICHELIN Key and a Forbes Five Star rating.

What we didn't

  • Dining and drinks are charged on top, so the final bill mounts up.
  • The property is so large that you'll often need a golf cart to reach the spa or your suite.

Cancún may be famous for its lively hotel strip, but at its southern tip lies a very different world.

NIZUC Resort & Spa sits on Punta Nizuc, tucked away in a dreamy cove of crystal blue water, yet only a short drive from the international airport. Pass through its great wooden gates and the noise of the city simply falls away, leaving only the sound of the sea and the rustle of tropical gardens.

This year, that sense of calm has been recognised at the very highest level. NIZUC has been awarded its first MICHELIN Key for 2026, joining the hotels the MICHELIN Guide recognises for some of the world’s most outstanding hospitality. It is now the only hotel in Cancún to hold both a MICHELIN Key and a Forbes Travel Guide Five Star rating.

The resort is set within a 29 acre natural preserve, surrounded by lush tropical foliage, mangroves and a flourishing coral reef. Its architecture is sleek and striking, a modern take on ancient Mayan style, with soaring ceilings, natural stone and wood, and reflective pools that glow when they’re lit at night. The design blends Mexican and Asian influences with quiet sophistication, and cobbled pathways wind through the gardens as golf carts glide past to offer a lift.

There are 274 suites and private villas spread across the property, each with a generous terrace, sweeping views and a freestanding soaking tub, and many with a private pool. The 44 Ocean Suites near the lobby are reserved for guests over 16, while the Residence Suites are ideal for families. For true seclusion, the private villas are set in their own tropical gardens, complete with an infinity pool, a waterfall and a shower you can enjoy indoors or out.

Inside, floor to ceiling windows frame the view, and the bed is positioned so you wake to the Caribbean. Bathrooms are generous, with two sinks, a rainfall shower and a deep freestanding bath, and the toiletries are by ESPA. Every suite has a Nespresso machine, a minibar and televisions in both the bedroom and the bathroom, along with a nightly turndown service.

Food is a highlight, with six restaurants making NIZUC the region’s premier culinary destination. The choice ranges from contemporary Mexican cuisine at Ramona to Asian fusion at Indochine, Peruvian dishes at Ni, Mediterranean cooking at Terra Nostra, and seafood grilled against ocean views at La Punta. In the evening, the intimate Havana Lounge pairs cigars with an extensive collection of Caribbean rums.

NIZUC Spa by ESPA is the resort’s crowning glory, and a Forbes Travel Guide Five Star spa in its own right. Its design pays tribute to Cancún’s Mayan past, with burnished gold accents, flickering candles and stone walls that recall ancient temples. A hydrotherapy circuit leads through steam, sauna, ice fountain and plunge pools, and the wellness offering now extends to MedSpa therapies and longevity programmes. Upstairs, there’s a well equipped gym and a studio for yoga and other classes.

Five pools are spread throughout the resort, and there are two white sand beaches, one of them reserved for adults. Families are well looked after with a supervised kids’ club, and business travellers will find excellent conference and meeting facilities for incentive trips and retreats.

Yet it is the simple moments that linger longest at NIZUC: a sunset cocktail with the sea breeze on your skin, a swim in your own pool beneath the stars, and waking each morning to the soft blue of the Caribbean.
