Alaska Airlines has rolled out a special aircraft livery marking Seattle’s status as a FIFA World Cup 2026 Host City, a highly visible signal that the carrier’s home hub expects one of its busiest summers on record.
For UK business travellers, the timing matters. Seattle-Tacoma International is Alaska’s global gateway and the arrival point for anyone flying the carrier’s new nonstop service between Seattle and London Heathrow, which launched this year. With six tournament matches staged in the city from 15 June, travellers heading to the Pacific Northwest for meetings or matchday hospitality should expect heavy demand on flights, hotels and ground transport throughout the tournament window.
A hometown statement on a 737-9 MAX
The design has been applied as a custom decal to a Boeing 737-9 MAX, tail number 985AK, the airline announced. Alaska is an Official Seattle World Cup 2026 Host City Supporter, in partnership with Qatar Airways, and the aircraft pays tribute to SeattleFWC26, the Local Organising Committee responsible for delivering the tournament in the region.
The scheme combines the Seattle Host City logo with a football in motion, a visual shorthand for the pace and momentum of the game, and draws on the official Seattle Host City poster. It also works in the carrier’s familiar whale tail graphic, referencing the region’s maritime heritage, while the underside of the fuselage carries the declaration “WE ARE SEATTLE”.
“We could not ask for a better hometown supporter than Alaska Airlines to carry Seattle and our region’s story to the world,” said Peter Tomozawa, chief executive of SeattleFWC26. “This livery is more than a design; it is a reflection of who we are as the Pacific Northwest, innovative, welcoming, and proud, and an open invitation to experience that firsthand.”
Part of a wider international push
The World Cup aircraft joins a growing collection of special schemes at the carrier, following the “To 45 and Beyond” design celebrating Horizon Air’s anniversary. It also lands at a moment of rapid international expansion for Alaska, which has introduced its first long-haul Business Class Suites as it builds out routes from Seattle to Europe and Asia. For SMEs weighing up transatlantic options, the combination of a direct Heathrow link and a premium long-haul product makes the carrier a more credible alternative on the West Coast than it has ever been.
Community programme runs beyond the paintwork
The partnership with SeattleFWC26 extends past the aircraft itself. Alaska is supporting a series of community initiatives through the spring and summer, including last month’s inaugural Blind Soccer international tournament, art installations spotlighting Seattle-area non-profit partners such as the Northwest Association for Blind Athletes and the Museum of Flight, and a flag-raising ceremony at which the airline will join fellow Host City Supporters to hoist the Seattle Host City flag atop the Space Needle.
Seattle’s six matches will be played at Lumen Field, renamed Seattle Stadium for the duration of the tournament.
