The aviation industry is poised for exponential growth over the next three decades, with a forecasted doubling of global air passenger numbers by 2042, as unveiled in the latest report by Airports Council International (ACI) World.

The World Airport Traffic Forecasts 2023 – 2052 report projects a significant rebound in air travel, with global passenger traffic expected to reach 9.7 billion by the close of 2024, surpassing pre-pandemic levels. This resurgence is a promising indicator of the industry’s recovery from the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Looking further ahead, the report anticipates a remarkable expansion, with passenger numbers projected to double to 19.3 billion by 2042. Of this total, domestic traffic is forecasted to soar to 10.6 billion, while international traffic is expected to reach 8.7 billion.

A notable shift in the top markets for air travel demand is also on the horizon. China is forecasted to overtake the United States as the leading market by 2042, reflecting the nation’s rapid economic growth and increasing propensity for air travel. Meanwhile, India is expected to maintain its position in third place, with Indonesia ascending from 13th to 4th place, underscoring the growing prominence of Asian markets in global aviation.

Conversely, the United Kingdom is poised to experience a decline in its ranking, slipping from fifth place to eighth by 2042, trailing behind countries like Japan and Turkey. This shift highlights the evolving dynamics of the global aviation landscape and the emergence of new powerhouse economies.

Commenting on the findings, ACI World Director General, Luis Felipe de Oliveira, emphasised the importance of strategic infrastructure investments to accommodate the anticipated surge in air travel. He highlighted the transition of passenger market dynamics from advanced economies to emerging and developing nations, driven by urbanization, population growth, and economic prosperity.

De Oliveira underscored the significance of responsible infrastructure development to sustainably meet capacity growth, thereby maximizing the social and economic benefits of aviation. This includes prioritizing investments in current and new infrastructure to ensure seamless travel experiences for passengers worldwide.

In parallel, ACI Europe’s recent projections indicate a positive trajectory for the region, with a forecasted 7.2% increase in passenger traffic compared to 2023. This growth trajectory positions 2024 figures to exceed pre-pandemic volumes by 1.4%, signaling a promising recovery for European aviation.

As the industry charts a course towards unprecedented growth, strategic planning and investment will be paramount in realizing the full potential of global air travel, driving economic prosperity and connectivity on a global scale.
