Turkey’s eSIM rules are still causing problems for international travellers in 2026, especially for anyone hoping to buy or top up a travel eSIM after landing.

The issue isn’t that eSIM technology has disappeared – it’s that access to many international eSIM apps and websites is blocked once you connect to Turkish networks, according to the latest guidance.

The restrictions stem from a July 10, 2025 BTK decision, which named several popular providers — including Saily, Airalo, Holafly, Nomad, Instabridge, Mobimatter, Alosim and BNESIM — as services affected by access limitations inside Turkey. Travellers often discover the issue only after arrival, when they find they can’t download apps, complete setup, buy new plans or top up existing ones while connected to Turkish networks .

Despite the confusion, eSIM itself is not banned. It remains a standard digital SIM technology used by Turkish mobile operators and compatible devices. The real challenge is regulatory access and compliance, not the technology itself . Turkey’s rules require eSIM systems, data storage and subscription management to be located inside the country or handled by authorised operators, which explains why many international apps are blocked locally .

For travellers, preparation before flying is essential. Devices must support eSIM and be unlocked, and any international eSIM should be purchased and installed before arrival, as apps may not load once inside Turkey. QR codes and activation details should be saved offline, and travellers should choose enough data for their entire stay because topping up may not be possible after landing.  Backup options such as roaming, hotel Wi‑Fi or a local SIM card remain useful, though local SIMs require passport identification checks.

One provider, eSIM Prime, says it continues to operate in Turkey because it complies with local regulations and works with authorised operators such as Turkcell and Türk Telekom. This makes it a practical option for travellers who want reliable connectivity without visiting a mobile store or relying on apps that may be inaccessible inside the country.

Turkey’s eSIM restrictions have changed how travellers prepare for connectivity, but not the need for mobile data. The simplest approach is to install your eSIM before departure, save all setup details offline and carry a backup connection to stay online throughout your trip.
