Set within the pine-framed serenity of Čikat Bay on Croatia’s Lošinj Island, Hotel Alhambra and its Historic Villas offer a refined retreat where history, wellness, and elegance intertwine.
At the helm is Lovorka Struna, a dynamic and multi-talented general manager whose life story reads like a symphony of passion, purpose, and poetry.
From top-league volleyball to event management, mountain guiding, and psychotherapy studies, Lovorka’s path to hospitality has been anything but ordinary. But each chapter has served a purpose — forming a leadership style that’s both intuitive and intentional. As Lošinj celebrates 140 years of tourism, she’s playing a pivotal role in shaping the island’s next chapter as a world-class destination of soulful luxury.
We spoke with Lovorka about her journey, her creative approach to guest experiences, and what it means to lead from the heart in one of Europe’s most enchanting island hideaways.
What inspired you to pursue a career in hotel management?
Sport and music have always been my driving forces — worlds full of energy, harmony, and transformation. I see luxury hospitality as a natural continuation of that rhythm. It’s elegant and dynamic, but also deeply human.
What pulled me in was the opportunity to create unforgettable, soul-stirring moments. I’m constantly inspired by the people around me — from visionary colleagues to kind-hearted guests — and I’m passionate about building teams who share that same joy and authenticity.
Hospitality, for me, is not a job — it’s a calling. It’s about orchestrating experiences that leave a lasting impression not only through service but through emotion. And there’s a quiet magic in that.
How do you balance emerging trends and evolving guests’ preferences?
I believe trends start with people. To understand what’s new and next, you first need to stay tuned in — to your guests, your environment, and your inner world. Growth in hospitality must be both external and internal.
Years ago, I attended a design conference where Wim Hof spoke. The next morning, I embraced his cold-shower ritual while others hesitated — and I haven’t stopped since. That moment taught me that change doesn’t always require revolution. Sometimes, it’s the small, brave steps that resonate most.
Here at Alhambra, we take the same approach. We listen, we observe, and we evolve gently. Our wellness offerings, for instance, are not trends in disguise — they’re lived experiences that grow from a place of genuine insight and care. When we innovate, we do it with purpose.
Looking back, is there anything you would have done differently?
From time to time, I wonder what it might have been like to work in Asia, as some of my peers have. The pace, the scale, the cultural contrast — it’s certainly a compelling thought.
But I have no regrets. I’m deeply proud of having helped shape Croatia’s luxury tourism offering from the ground up. In many ways, we were pioneers — building a standard of service and storytelling that didn’t exist here before. That has immense value.
Today, as I walk the same forest trails once graced by Habsburg royalty, I know I’m right where I need to be. Lošinj is more than a place — it’s a feeling. And I’m proud to be part of its evolution.
What defines your management style?
My leadership is guided by intuition, collaboration, and a deep commitment to personal growth — for myself and for others. I love uncovering the unique potential in people and then helping refine that spark into something truly impactful.
I had wonderful mentors along my journey, and now it’s my turn to pay that forward. Whether I’m supporting a team member through a challenge or coaching them toward a new role, I do so with care, clarity, and encouragement.
I also believe leadership is about being present. Not just physically, but emotionally. When people feel seen, heard, and valued, they flourish — and when they flourish, so does the guest experience.
What are your strategic goals and vision for the hotel?
My vision is to position Hotel Alhambra as a sanctuary — not just a place to stay, but a place to feel. A place where time slows down, senses awaken, and guests reconnect with something deeper.
When people think of Lošinj, I want them to remember the scent of Aleppo pines, the shimmer of the Adriatic, the soft rustle of linen in the breeze. We offer more than a service — we offer space. For stillness, for connection, for beauty.
Our promise is simple: moments that stir the heart and leave an imprint. Not louder, not bigger — just more true. That’s the kind of luxury the world is seeking right now.
What advice would you give to someone starting out?
Think beyond the obvious. Hospitality isn’t only about rooms and restaurants — it’s about insight, intuition, and innovation. Trust your instincts and don’t be afraid to explore the edges of what’s possible.
Also, study your competition — but more importantly, ask yourself what they haven’t yet thought of. That’s where you’ll find your space to shine.
And finally, stay curious. This industry is an incredible platform for personal evolution. If you remain open to growth, there’s no limit to the places it can take you — both professionally and personally.
