AIRE Ancient Baths London, located in the bustling Covent Garden area, offers a tranquil retreat from the city’s fast-paced life.
Owned by AIRE, a Spanish company renowned for its luxurious bathhouses inspired by ancient Roman, Greek, and Ottoman traditions, this London location is one of eight worldwide but there are more in the pipeline.
The AIRE Ancient Baths London boasts a history as enchanting as the experiences it provides. Nestled within a Georgian building from the 18th century, crafted by neoclassical architect Robert Adam, this storied edifice once served as the home of J.M. Barrie, the creator of “Peter Pan,” with the first edition proudly displayed under glass in the reception area.
The building’s maintains some of its original features, including ceiling roses, cornices, and brick vaulted ceilings, have been meticulously preserved, adding to the venue’s charm and character. Originally the subterranean space was also a wine cellar, a fact highlighted by a huge decorative rack of empty bottles and other tasteful touches.
It is not part of a hotel and does not have a restaurant, but there is a rather lovely reception room inspired by the building’s JM Barrie literary link, filled with books and a roaring fireplace, and the smart changing rooms with lots of amenities should not be rushed.
As I opened the door, the enticing aroma of orange blossoms greeted me, After changing into a robe and very cute little black slipper/socks, I was led down the serene, candle-lit stairs. The atmosphere was calm, with complete silence except for the gentle sound of moving water, which heightened all my senses.
The interior features a labyrinth of thermal baths, each offering a unique temperature and experience. The Tepidarium, kept at a cozy 36 degrees, is perfect for unwinding, whereas the Caldarium, heated to a toasty 40 degrees, provides comforting warmth. The bubbling Balneum, a hydromassage tub equipped with a series of jets, contrasts sharply with the Frigidarium, which offers a brisk 10-degree plunge for a revitalizing shock.
The bathhouse also features a Vaporium steam room infused with mint and eucalyptus, a hydrotherapy pool, and the Floatarium, a salt-water bath where guests can float effortlessly. The entire space is illuminated by hundreds of candles, creating a peaceful and otherworldly atmosphere. Phones are not allowed, and speaking is discouraged, ensuring a truly immersive and relaxing experience.
