On the banks of The Guadalquivir River, Seville is the largest historic centre in Southern Spain, well-known for its World Heritage Sites consisting of the Cathedral, the Royal Alcázars, Moorish palaces, historic churches, lush green gardens, Tabacco factory and of course home to Flamenco!

Location and Surroundings

Set slightly back on an orange tree lined street in front of the Cathedral and the Giralda, The EME Catedral Mercer Hotel is a 5-star cosmopolitan luxury hotel located in the Santa Cruz District.  A mediaeval Jewish quarter with a maze of narrow streets most of which lead to small squares lined with cafes, bars and restaurants serving Tapas, chilled local red wine and Cruz Campo beer made locally.   This district is also on the doorstep of the large shopping area containing numerous local and many high street shops. Seville even has one of the oldest Bullrings in Spain which is still in use and hosts other events including concerts.

The Bilingual staff at the EME Catedral Mercer Hotel are very professional, personable and create an extremely welcoming experience for every guest. Their attention to detail and commitment shows the 5* service which sets them apart and contributes significantly to the overall charm of the hotel.

The 60 roomed hotel is made up from a number of smaller Sevillian houses which are listed buildings and date back to the XVI Century.  They have been fully restored and joined together by a labyrinth of walkways connecting each part of the hotel.  They have even showcased parts of the ruined walls as decoration, overlayed with glass floors, water features and mood lighting.  From the moment you step out of the sun into the lobby, the history is seamlessly woven with modern amenities.

Accommodation

The rooms, whilst echoing the hotel’s historic charm, offer all the conveniences of the 21st century, from flat-screen TVs to complimentary Wi-Fi.  Most are large and flooded with natural light, and include 24-hour room service, premium bedding, dressing gowns and work areas.

I stayed in a Gran deluxe which has its own, seating area, large standalone bathtub, marble wash basins, rainforest shower and separate toilet with bidet with Designer toiletries.  The bed is position perfectly so you wake up draw the curtains and reveal the stunning view of the Cathedral.  Some rooms have the bonus of a private terrace with table and chairs. All include a coffee machine and mini bar which is restocked daily and included in the nightly price.

Outside each room, the number is illuminated on the floor.  This shows initiative and sustainability when areas are not in use and this low lighting allows you to negotiate the maze of corridors with ease.

Other Facilities

There are two restaurants on each corner of the building that have open kitchens serving food all day and can be used by members of the public.  The residents have a private breakfast area with a full menu of freshly cooked items as you would expect in a 5* hotel.

It also has its own Gym,  Spa which offers treatments, together with a thermal water circuit, sauna/steam rooms, all of which can be hired exclusively.  There are a number of panoramic terraces with tables and chairs leading to a small outdoor pool but the pièce de résistanceis the hotel’s panoramic terrace, La Terraza EME.  This is open all year and offers panoramic views of Seville Cathedral and La Giralda serving aptly named cocktails in the sunshine with chilled music and a view – a must visit whilst in the City.  Open to the general public and a hidden gem.

In conclusion

The EME Catedral Mercer Hotel offers a unique blend of historical charm and modern comfort. Situated in a prime location in the heart of the City and combined with its exceptional service and amenities, make it an excellent choice for any traveller on a City break who appreciate a 5* hotel but at a fraction of the normal cost.

Would I go Back?

Yes, without hesitation! The city is unique with the different eras and cultures of architecture, its originality and historic value and of course the flamboyance from its Flamengo roots.  Food and drink are excellent and such good value for money compared to a lot of other major City breaks.
