Perched above the Gulf of Naples in the heart of Sorrento, Ara Maris Hotel & Spa is entering 2026 with renewed ambition positioning itself as a design-led Mediterranean retreat defined by contemporary architecture, destination-driven gastronomy and immersive wellness.

Opened in 2024, the 49-key boutique property has quickly established itself as Sorrento’s only fully contemporary, design-focused hotel and its sole adults-only address (welcoming guests aged 10+). For travellers seeking a refined counterpoint to the Amalfi Coast’s grand historic hotels, Ara Maris offers an intimate environment rooted in privacy, calm and strong local identity.

Designed by Milan-based Spagnulo & Partners, the hotel reinterprets 1960s Italian modernism, with subtle references to Gio Ponti visible in its geometric façade and rhythmic lighting scheme.

Craftsmanship is central to the narrative: handmade ceramics by Giovanni De Maio, custom furnishings by Molteni, nautical-inspired wood by Listone Giordano and lighting by Panzeri combine with bronze detailing and natural stone flooring. Imperfections are embraced as part of the property’s material honesty.

At its core sits an elliptical swimming pool framed by nearly 2,000 square metres of gardens, a rare sanctuary in central Sorrento. Above, the Lumi Sky Lounge crowns the building, offering panoramic views across the Gulf and a cinematic sunset setting.

Public spaces double as evolving gallery environments, with rotating exhibitions curated in collaboration with Orma Art, reinforcing Ara Maris’ cultural positioning.

For 2026, Ara Maris introduces a new culinary chapter with the appointment of Luigi Lionetti as Executive Chef.

Previously recognised for his Michelin-starred work at Punta Tragara in Capri, Lionetti brings deep ties to Campania and the Sorrentine Peninsula. His philosophy centres on “authentic luxury”, generous yet precise cuisine grounded in regional ingredients.

Menus will highlight sun-ripened tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, Sorrento’s braided mozzarella, local dairy, citrus and the daily catch from the Gulf. At Lumi Sky Lounge, the focus shifts to refined aperitivo rituals and shareable small plates, while the main restaurant offers a more expressive interpretation of Campanian gastronomy.

Through longstanding relationships with local producers and fishermen, Lionetti aims to position Ara Maris as one of the Peninsula’s most compelling new culinary addresses.

Wellness is anchored by Thala Spa, named after thalassa, the Greek word for sea, and conceived as a sensory journey shaped by coastal light and marine textures.

Signature treatments include the Red Coral Ritual, inspired by Tui Na and Shiatsu techniques and referencing coral craftsmanship from Torre del Greco. Seasonal highlights such as the Lemon Massage incorporate oils derived from Sorrento’s famed citrus groves.

The spa partners with Italian skincare house Herbelia and science-led brand Bakel, and will introduce Venice Head Spa technology in 2026, blending Japanese head spa techniques with holistic therapies.

Wellness extends beyond treatment rooms, with poolside yoga, fitness experiences and curated arrival rituals designed to ease guests into relaxation.

As travellers increasingly look beyond the Amalfi Coast’s most crowded enclaves, Sorrento is reclaiming its identity as a destination in its own right offering proximity to Capri, Pompeii and the wider Campania region without sacrificing authenticity.

Ara Maris positions itself at the centre of this shift: a property where architecture, gastronomy and wellness converge in a distinctly contemporary Mediterranean expression.

For 2026, the message is clear; Sorrento’s next chapter is design-led, chef-driven and deeply rooted in place.
