The Book Hotel, a 25-key coastal retreat carved from a 19th-century literary landmark, opens this month after a seven-year, €8.5 million restoration, and signals the Azores’ quiet march upmarket.
The Azores has long traded on volcanoes, whale watching and hydrangea-lined lanes rather than five-star polish. That changes this month with the opening of The Book Hotel on Faial, the island’s first five-star property, in the harbour town of Horta.
The hotel is the product of a seven-year, €8.5 million restoration of a 19th-century building overlooking the Atlantic. The property once housed the Liceu da Horta, the island’s historic secondary school, and later the Grémio Literário Faialense, a longstanding literary and cultural society, a heritage that gives the hotel both its name and its character.
“The name The Book Hotel is directly inspired by the historical identity of the building,” said Olena Dolga, project director at Lamparina Melódica. “The property has always been closely linked to education and culture in Horta. We wanted to preserve its identity while creating a space that feels contemporary and welcoming.”
Managed by Amazing Evolution, the property offers just 20 rooms and five apartments, with interiors blending contemporary design, natural materials and subtle nods to the building’s bookish past. Expansive ocean views and calm communal spaces are designed to encourage guests to slow down, a deliberate pitch to the growing cohort of travellers for whom slow journeys have become the new luxury.
Known as the blue island for the hydrangeas that blanket its landscape, Faial has long drawn adventurous and culturally curious visitors with its dramatic volcanic scenery, marine culture and whale watching. The Book Hotel builds on that setting with curated island experiences, tailored wellness programmes and a high-end restaurant.
“The opening of The Book Hotel feels like a special new chapter for Faial island,” said Bruno Barbosa, operational director at Amazing Evolution. “With a limited number of rooms and a highly tailored approach, The Book Hotel aims to offer a more intimate and considered alternative, combining premium comfort with the warmth and character of a boutique property.
“Its opening also reflects the continued evolution of the Azores as a premium European destination, particularly for those drawn to slower, more conscious, experience-led travel.”

Getting there from the UK is straightforward by mid-Atlantic standards: fly direct from London to Lisbon and connect to Faial, or fly direct to São Miguel in the Azores and continue on to the island.
The Book Hotel is expected to open later this month, June 2026, with rates starting from €200 per night.
