Jet2holidays has nearly doubled the number of certified sustainable hotels within its portfolio, reaching 1,500 properties as part of a wider strategy to expand environmentally responsible accommodation choices for travellers.
The figure has risen significantly from around 800 hotels when the operator first introduced its sustainability labelling scheme three years ago. The programme identifies properties that meet recognised environmental standards listed by ABTA, The Travel Association for sustainable accommodation.
Jet2holidays is now on course to meet its long-term goal of offering more than 3,000 certified sustainable hotels by 2035.
Hotels included in the programme must meet recognised sustainability benchmarks covering areas such as reducing energy consumption, lowering water usage, minimising waste and sourcing products locally.
Certification also recognises initiatives that support local communities and encourage responsible resource use, including the adoption of reusable, returnable and recycled materials.
To support further growth in the scheme, Jet2holidays has introduced a new sustainable hotel toolkit designed to guide hotel partners through the certification process.
The toolkit was developed in partnership with the Foundation for Environmental Education, which operates the internationally recognised Green Key environmental certification programme.
According to the operator, the resource aims to help hotel partners understand both the requirements and benefits of obtaining recognised sustainability accreditation.
Paul Southall, head of sustainability at Jet2, said the certified sustainable hotels collection is a central element of the company’s broader sustainability strategy.
“Our certified sustainable hotels collection is a key component of our ambitious sustainability strategy, meaning that customers can easily find and choose accommodation that has achieved a sustainability certification,” he said.
Southall added that the company intends to grow the programme to more than 3,000 properties by 2035, reflecting rising demand from travellers seeking environmentally responsible holiday options.
For the tour operator, expanding the collection is also intended to help hotel partners meet evolving consumer expectations as sustainability becomes an increasingly important factor in booking decisions.
By making certification more accessible through its toolkit and industry partnerships, Jet2holidays aims to accelerate adoption across its supplier network while giving customers clearer visibility of hotels meeting recognised environmental standards.
