One of India’s most storied luxury hotel groups has entered a milestone year, with The Leela Palaces, Hotels & Resorts announcing a significant expansion programme and a calendar of cultural initiatives to commemorate its 40th anniversary.

Since opening its first property, The Leela Mumbai, in 1986, the brand has grown into a portfolio of palaces, hotels and resorts rooted in the Indian ethos of Atithi Devo Bhava, guest is god, a philosophy that has positioned the group as a leading voice in the country’s luxury hospitality sector and an increasingly important option for international business travellers seeking something beyond the standard global chains.

The group is using the anniversary year to accelerate its development pipeline. Three new properties have been earmarked for launch: The Leela Coorg Forest Sanctuary, set in the coffee-growing hills of Karnataka; The Leela Jaisalmer, capitalising on the desert city’s growing profile on the high-end itinerary; and The Leela Luxury Residences in Mumbai, the brand’s first foray into branded residential living in its home city.

Commercially, the emphasis on key markets, Coorg, Mumbai and Jaisalmer, signals the group’s intent to deepen its presence in both leisure destinations and business hubs, at a time when international carriers are adding capacity to India and corporate travel demand into the subcontinent continues to rebound.

Alongside the bricks-and-mortar expansion, The Leela is rolling out a series of new food and beverage and membership concepts. Arq by The Leela is to debut at The Leela Palace New Delhi and The Leela Palace Chennai, extending the brand’s private membership offer aimed at frequent business guests and local members. At The Leela Palace Bengaluru, The Azulian House will open as a fine-dining venue designed to blend storytelling with gastronomy, a direct nod to the growing appetite among corporate travellers for destination restaurants within their hotels.

The anniversary programme also leans heavily on cultural credentials. A commemorative musical album by sarod maestros Amaan and Ayaan Ali Bangash has been commissioned, while the newly established Leela Centre of Excellence is intended to train the next generation of hospitality professionals, a response to persistent skills shortages across the luxury sector. Guests can expect specially curated menus tracing the brand’s four-decade journey, and expanded wellness programming under the Aujasya by The Leela umbrella, including signature rituals and residential retreats.

Internally, the milestone was marked by a simultaneous all-employee town hall across the portfolio, with long-service awards and a commemorative 40-year insignia presented to associates, a reminder, the group says, that luxury hospitality remains a people business.

The year’s activities will culminate in a landmark charity gala in November.

For corporate buyers and frequent travellers to India, the message is clear: The Leela is positioning itself not merely as a heritage brand trading on nostalgia, but as a confident, expanding operator intent on shaping the next chapter of Indian luxury hospitality, with properties, programming and partnerships designed to keep pace with an increasingly discerning international clientele.
