Rocco Forte Hotels has wrapped a literary and cultural programme around its London to Edinburgh rail journey, timing the launch to coincide with the UK’s National Year of Reading. Called the Great British Cultural Journey, it is available only to guests booking a Forte Suite on the group’s existing Great British Journey experience, which connects Brown’s Hotel in London with The Balmoral in Edinburgh.
For business travellers, the interest lies less in the train than in what has been attached to either end of it. The group has put together access that individuals would find difficult to arrange on their own, which makes the itinerary a realistic option for anyone already running meetings in both cities and weighing up whether to stay put over a weekend rather than fly home in between.
What the London to Edinburgh rail journey now includes
In Edinburgh, the package covers a two-night suite stay at The Balmoral, a Dine Around Scotland experience given a literary slant, and a choice of private literary tours covering ground from Harry Potter and Muriel Spark to Sherlock Holmes. Guests can also book a storytelling session with the award-winning Scottish author Sir Ian Rankin. The hotel is offering privileged access to several of the country’s leading cultural institutions, among them The King’s Gallery, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and the National Museum of Scotland, whose collection runs from the Lewis Chessmen to Dolly the Sheep.
At Brown’s, the London half centres on a private literary walk led by the hotel historian Andy Williamson and an Agatha Christie experience marking 50 years since the author’s death. Guests receive a bespoke edition of At Bertram’s Hotel, a novel widely thought to have been inspired by Brown’s, which was Christie’s favourite hotel. The rest of the London programme takes in martinis in the Donovan Bar’s “Naughty Corner”, an evening at The Mousetrap, a private visit to Colnaghi Gallery and Champagne Afternoon Tea in the hotel’s Drawing Room.
Where it fits in a corporate itinerary
The offer lands at a point when rail is gaining ground with corporate bookers. Research has shown business travellers increasingly choosing train travel over short-haul alternatives, driven by carbon reporting and the ability to work en route. A London to Edinburgh trip is one of the clearest cases in the UK, and the group is betting that suite guests will pay for structure once the working part of the trip is over.
There is a cost consideration in Edinburgh. The city is introducing the UK’s first city-wide visitor levy, a percentage charge on accommodation that will bite hardest at the top of the market, so finance teams signing off suite stays should expect the line to appear on the invoice. Travel managers comparing options will also want to read the package against the luxury hotel openings reshaping business travel in 2026, because both cities have new stock competing for the same corporate accounts.
Richard Cooke, managing director for the United Kingdom and Northern Europe at Rocco Forte Hotels, said: “This offering celebrates two of Britain’s most storied destinations through the distinct character of Brown’s Hotel and The Balmoral. Together, they create an extraordinary British cultural journey, combining literary heritage, world-class art, exceptional hospitality and personalised experiences that connect guests with the spirit of London and Edinburgh.”
How to book
The experience sits within Rocco Forte’s Suites and Beyond programme, which is restricted to suite guests across the collection. Suites are designed to reflect the history and craftsmanship of each city, while the experiences beyond the room are arranged through long-standing local relationships that open doors to cultural institutions, artists and galleries.
The launch is pegged to the National Year of Reading, the national campaign running through 2026, and draws on literary touches already present across the group, including the P.G. Wodehouse books kept at Brown’s. Guests can book a Forte Suite stay at either hotel through the Great British Journey offer page or the individual hotel websites.
