United Airlines has announced plans to install larger overhead bins on its SkyWest-operated Embraer E175 fleet, aimed at providing passengers with more space for their carry-on luggage.
As the world’s largest E175 operator, SkyWest operates over 700 daily flights to more than 140 destinations on behalf of United Express, the regional arm of United Airlines.
The new overhead bins on these regional jets will accommodate up to an additional 29 carry-on bags, representing an impressive 80% increase in storage space. By the end of 2024, these enhanced bins will be available on 50 aircraft with a 76-seat configuration. United also revealed its intention to expand this upgrade to more than 150 aircraft by the end of 2026.
United estimates that this initiative will benefit nearly one million passengers annually, eliminating the need for over 150,000 E175 flights to require passengers to check their bags at the gate.
Linda Jojo, United’s chief customer officer, expressed enthusiasm for the positive feedback received regarding the new overhead bins and signature interiors. She noted that this enhancement will contribute to increased gate and boarding satisfaction among passengers, furthering the airline’s commitment to delivering an exceptional experience to all customers.
In addition to the expanded storage capacity, every E175 aircraft equipped with these upgraded bins will feature braille and tactile placards, enhancing accessibility onboard for all passengers.
This announcement follows United’s recent introduction of a new feature allowing members of its MileagePlus loyalty program to pool their miles with family and friends into a joint account, further enhancing the airline’s customer-centric approach.
United Airlines continues to invest in improvements across its fleet, aiming to elevate the travel experience for passengers on both regional and international flights.
